A message with the following subject line showed up in two of my inboxen this morning:
FELICITATION VOUS AVEZ GAGNE LA SOMME DE 150.000 EURO (ceci n'est pas un spam)

Now, I would really prefer it if René Magritte would stop sending me this kind of message altogether. L'Office québécois de la langue française, on the other hand, would simply like ( Read more... )

How much traction does "courriel" have compared to "email" in typical Francophone usage these days, anyway? I remember hearing about it quite some time ago, and suspecting that deliberate attempts to guide the language would in general not do well in the face of easy loanwords and casual convenience.

I don't really communicate in French often enough to have a good sense of how generally courriel is used. Certainly lots of organizations use it in official communications, but I'm not sure about more colloquial usage.
