“Goodbye, Ace.”
She couldn’t feel anything. It wasn’t that she didn’t want to, she wanted to cry, to tell him not to go, but she just… couldn’t.
“Do you remember that time, Prof- Doctor, when you took me to the circus?”
They exchanged a knowing stare.
“I never much liked clowns. They were too happy, they were always so excited; I always imagined they were crying on the inside.”
The Doctor took off his hat and placed it on her head, wrapped his scarf around her neck and looped his umbrella around her wrist.
He rose.
“That’s because they were.”
