The headlights projected a thin, sharp line into the rainy night. Justin turned to look out the passenger window, seeing nothing but inky blackness beyond the edge of the road.

The radio played quietly, a song that Justin didn't recognize. He glanced over at Brian, his profile hazy within the darkened interior of the car.

"Almost there." Brian's voice was low and rough, the perfect complement to the surrounding shadows. Justin shifted in his seat and almost smiled. When he looked down, he saw Brian's hand lying against his jeans, palm facing up. Justin reached over, letting their fingers intertwine.

Driving with Brian had always been quite the experience, especially but not exclusively since he had bought the Corvette.

Justin vividly remembered their first drive in Brian’s beautiful baby: A new morning had already begun to tint the wan night-sky a gentle orange - a colour which had meant everything to Justin. It had been the new blue. It had meant love.
The ‘Vette’s celadon lacquer had shimmered like a sea set on fire as Brian had wrapped his arms around Justin’s waist and pressed a tender kiss to the pale neck.

“How do you like her?”

“She’s a real beauty.”

The grin which Justin had felt against his skin at that moment had caused such a surge of joy inside his body that his insides had clenched together painfully. This, he had thought, this is love! No crimson roses, but orange and celadon and an honest smile on Brian’s face...

“Sunshine, no drooling on the leather-seats.”

Brian’s amused, but quiet words woke Justin from this harmonious reminiscence and brought him back into present: They were driving in that same celadon Corvette along a lonely road somewhere in Vermont, but other than the State’s border sign Justin had no clue as to their mysterious destination.

He looked at Brian. Neither his perfect headdress nor his implacably en vogue clothing style had changed, but Justin’s keen glance didn’t miss the silver strands in the nape of his neck and the deep wrinkles around the hazel eyes which suddenly turned to his own.

Justin smiled:

“I can’t help it if I’m bored. We’ve been stuck in here for hours.”

They looked at each other, battling silently, until Brian diverted his eyes and fixed them back onto the road with a wide grin. It made him look younger, as if he was up to mischief. And he certainly was up to something!

Justin suppressed a laughter and followed his gaze:

Just like this, they had sat in this car those few years ago, only that they had not been driving into the night but out of it. Sex in Brian’s office had been breathtakingly amazing, but holding hands in his new car had been simply perfect. Justin would never forget how post-orgasmic-reunion-bliss had made them talk and laugh for the entire drive as if they had never talked to each other before - and maybe they had not, or at least, not in the same way of understanding each other.

And they had reached yet another level of understanding - the kind that only time and endurance can bring, the kind which permitted him to hold Brian Kinney’s hand and say absolutely nothing. And still be no less content driving into the night than out of it.

It has been eight years, Justin suddenly realised. Eight years since orange had become the new blue and celadon had begun to hold a secret meaning.

Orange, blue and celadon.

As Brian sped along the narrow backroad, Justin realised that those were the colours of his life.
