A Life-Changing Fandom: A Reminiscence

Dec 14, 2008 19:39

As long as I had even one episode of QAF unseen, I stayed away from all Queer As Folk-related web sites. I hate to be Spoiled, and after the horrific ending of S1, I knew that there was always the possibility.... So I stayed clear. Then I watched Brian tell Justin that he wanted, "Your drawers in my drawers," and all bets were off.

Beautifully written. I also want to take a second and say "Kinneygarten" is one of my favorites.

I like it, too.

A non-QAF-watching friend recently asked to read something I had written, and I steered her to "Kinneygarten." I think it works well even when you don't know anything about the adult Brian. Anyway, she liked it. FanSee

Thank you so much for sharing your QaF Journey.

I'm glad you finally moved beyond your snobbery. Otherwise we would have missed out on some wonderful stories. :D

I had the impression that all fanfic was amateurish and embarrassing and, sure enough, there's some of that out there. There's plenty more that is well-written, well-plotted, and deftly characterized. I include your fanfic in the latter category. I hope to find time to read more of Gus' story, as well as the other fics you've written. FanSee

Wow. How inspiring and wonderful to read this. What a fitting end to our QAF weekend of love.

What better than for a show to connect you to people, expose you to new things and open up a part of you, you didn't know you had. I can say I had a very similar experience and I'm so happy to read your post.

All best. And Happy Holidays. :)

Thank you for your comment. I really wrote these three segments for myself, and never thought I'd get the response I have.

If you haven't read the other two parts, and want to, scroll back further. One is about how I found QAF, the other is on my viewing experience. FanSee

I love your stories,so I'm happy that you decided to read fanfic, and that led to you writing it as well.
I'm glad that you've found good friends, literature and music through the fandom.
Those are some of the best things about any fandom, and I'm happy to say I've found those things as well in the time I've been here.
I look forward to reading more of your stories!

Oh FanSee,

I loved this post. You made me smile, laugh & cry, its just oh so emotional.

I love your fics, I told you in a post last week, I re-read Announcements whilst away on holidays, certain scenes from that fic, have never left me, a beautiful story.

Like you I had to find "something" & living here in Sydney, I knew nothing about fandoms & the internet, BUT I knew I had to find someone who was hurting like I was (513 killed me) So I Googled Gale Harold & like you I lurked around, read comments, found a gazillion sites, which lead me to the Yahoo Spoilers Board for B&J, which lead me to the BJFic site & the rest is history. I read vamphiles The End Done Right, which lead me to the LJ & to me! "sexy p" I'll never forget Vamps, she told me "welcome to the LJ, have fun, but it's soooooooo addictive" & she was right. I love it here, have many, many world wide friends, & of course flying to NYC & meeting Gale in Jan07 was & will always be a dream come true, shit I finally met him, & then I knew that BK really had "left the building" it was ( ... )
