in my opinion he is saying that he/she still breathes because she or he feels guilty (sorrow) towards whoever they killed so they feel like they have to live with their sins or guilt.
That is how i interpret it anyway but the rest of it i think that you are entirely correct on its just a matter of opinion or how you decide to interpret it :)
