the story of their lives

Aug 18, 2007 10:02

For some years now, I've been in the habit of working to movies. By this I do not mean working out - sadly, that's a habit I've not yet acquired. (Willing spirit, meet weak flesh. WHUMP.) By this I mean that I put the movies on, press Play or Enter or Do Me Now, Fool or whatever the machinery I'm using requires, and then ... don't watch them. ( Read more... )

I'm a bit obsessed with the idea of narrative, of storytelling, for reasons that...well, they're complicated and weird. But the short version is yes, I love to have a movie playing in the background (or, more rarely, a television show) while I work on something else. Knowing how *something* ends makes everything else a little less tense ( ... )

I will totally dance with you, but who leads? ;)

I understand what you are talking about completely. We have at least three 'old favorites' that we will put in to occasionally watch, but more to listen and chime in with the good lines at the right moments. Our faves are: Clue, Murder By Death, and Noises Off. I heartily recommend any/all of them to you as they are wonderful. And, Clue has Tim Curry! <3

Miss you, Q dear!

I do that when I knit. I'm not good enough not to pay attention to my knitting so I have to have something on TV that I already know so I'm not worrying about following the story. Because there's always something new, something lurking that hasn't been watched yet, I love this time as a time to reconnect with old favourites. The West Wing is something I'll return to over and over again at these times because the show is so dialogue based that if you've already seen the episode a couple of times you really don't need to be watching. That, and it's like wrapping a warm blanket around me, even when things are fraught in the storyline. Firefly and Serenity also fit in here. And (I refuse to be ashamed about this) Bring it On, which is the best cheerleader film ever. Ooh, maybe I'll go and put it on.

I can leave on old eps of Law & Order the original flavor or SVU since I've seen just about every episode ever made. The other option is house flipping or home remodeling shows. While I am interested in the topic, I can get it by osmosis while I work and only occasionally glance at the tube. It also allows me to stop and ridicule them for doing things like making a BUTTON CHANDELIER OMG and not have to watch them make it. I tend not to put on old DVDs unless I actually actively want to watch them.

I think that like you and omphale23 (does she really have 23 belly buttons? Inquiring minds want to know) most humans love narrative ( ... )
