As a fair number of y'all know, I'm scheduled for surgery very early in the morning this Thursday, 9 April, at which point I will be having my right knee joint totally replaced. Bring a medium-sized notebook with you. You can write down your questions for doctors/nurses, and if the meds make you brain-foggy the notebook will be there to remind you.

Before you go to the hospital, pick out a stack of books to read while recovering. Stack up a variety. You may want to include some of the longer French or Russian novels or the more tedious Victorians, because they read a lot better when you have more time.

In the hospital, you may not want to take too many books, because they're likely to shove you out before you're ready to read. Anesthesia really wipes out the brain. That can take a long time to clear out completely, but in the first day or so you might not be up to the narrative demands of Gilligan's Island, even.

OTOH, in the hospital you need music. An iPod may be stolen, but if you have an old Walkman or Discman, now is the time to dig it out.

Have a pleasant recovery and a happy new knee.

No golden nuggets of advice, just love and best wishes for a safe, relatively pain-free, and successful surgery and recovery!
