Although I like Rock Band/Guitar Hero, I keep wishing there was a better music game out there. A game that had all the great music that I actually like to listen to. A game with a more realistic, open control system where you really felt like you were playing the music. A game with a controller that actually mimics what the real instruments feel ( Read more... )

The next generation of these games are going to come with "build your own track" utilities. I don't know if you can use your own music.

Hook up some sensors to the trombone keys and create your own controller. There's also a game called "Unsigned" that's an open source version of Rock Band -- perhaps you could do something there.

not at all. i'm providing some counterpoint to his first paragraph that basically follows this format:

1. they're changing these games that you consider deficient in a manner that might make them more suitable for the type of game you're looking for.
2. or screw all that and hack something together yourself.

i think you just like to bitch.

I appreciate the info, especially "Unsigned"... I hadn't considered that there'd be open-source games using music controllers, but in retrospect it's a pretty obvious thing. Kerry's right though, I was mostly just thinking about the irony of spending all this time playing "music" in a video game when I'm actually a musician, and haven't touched a real instrument in months. I actually have no problem with Guitar Hero and Rock Band as video games (except for the Rock Band drum set, which sucks).
