Weibird Lyric ChallengeThe earbuds went in as soon as the van door slid closed. Jaehwan's mouth fell open but Taekwoon didn't hear a word, that happy voice replaced by a sudden guitar riff. Taekwoon leaned back in his usual seat, shoved against the window where he liked it. From here he could watch and not listen. He could tune out what was around him, at least for the duration of the ride.
Through the music, Taekwoon could still hear the roar of the fans. He closed his eyes and saw them smiling up at him. A few reached for him through the crowd and he waved back. The screams made him want to shrink behind stage, but he didn't. That wasn't an option. Hakyeon was talking to them as he always did, his voice a cheerful mix of motherly affection and teasing. Most eyes turned to him, but a few remained glued to Taekwoon, and he felt frozen in that gaze. He wasn't sure where to put his hands, so he folded them behind his back. Meeting their eyes was too difficult, so he chose to look at a scuffed spot on the stage instead. He nodded a little at them without looking but that only made it worse. They continued to stare, and he shifted from one foot to another. Their expectation made him flustered. Unlike Hakyeon, he couldn't read what they wanted.
If only they'd just look away.
"-right, Leo?" Taekwoon flinched and turned to Hakyeon, who was smiling the smile that wasn't really a smile. At Taekwoon's confused look, Hakyeon laughed and turned back to the fans. "Yah, he couldn't do that. You know our Leo, right?" The fans laughed along with Hakyeon and Taekwoon felt his face go a little red. Instinctively he looked down at the stage, until he was sure no one could see his face. He could hear Hakyeon's voice but Taekwoon wasn't listeing anymore. Hakyeon was always there to smoothly counteract Taekwoon's awkward moments, but sometimes Taekwoon wondered if Hakyeon enjoyed it, too, when he had to come to Taekwoon's rescue.
What would you do without me? Hakyeon's eyes gleamed after they got off stage. He never felt the words, but Taekwoon could see them in Hakyeon's slightly smug grin. Taekwoon was a lost cause with the fans, but by now he knew Hakyeon. In those moments Taekwoon wished he knew how to think quickly, knock Hakyeon down a peg with a sharp rebuttal, but if he were capable of that he would never have this problem in the first place.
And most of the time, he could see Hakyeon's point. If it were anyone but Hakyeon, if Taekwoon didn't have someone there to pop in with a quick word and save the day, would Taekwoon have ever made it?
Taekwoon opened his eyes and found Hakyeon looking at him, a bemused little smile on his face that was, at least, genuine. Shifting his eyes away, Taekwoon didn't mind the way the others chuckled at his obvious dismissal. Here, he didn't have to worry. With them he was safe, but soon enough he'd have to yank out the earbuds again.
