Time for an annual rant (voting)

Nov 04, 2007 10:56

I want a website where I can input my address and get my polling location and a list of what I'm going to see on Tuesday - races, candidates and party affiliation, and any ballot questions. Bonus points for links to candidates' webpages and/or a brief description of the candidate and their platform(s ( Read more... )

I too would like something like this. I want to be informed, but find it difficult to make time to do all this various background research...

Found this on a quick search - http://apps.county.allegheny.pa.us/votedistricts/

It definitely gives the polling place, but I haven't found info on candidates. (my search was "pittsburgh voting districts")

http://www.clpgh.org/subject/government/voter.html

everything is linked through this, perhaps it's less digging than through newspaper, perhaps not...

It's really the digging that gets to me - I guess I'm a victim of modern conveniences. I'd like a one-stop shop that works anywhere in the country.

I do know where my polling place is... Luckily, they tell you that when you change your voter's registration to reflect a new address. You just have to remember to do that. And no, updating your driver's license doesn't update your voter's reg. Experience talking here.

http://www.vote411.org and http://www.smartvoter.org both look promising. smartvoter.org has a list of state & county election candidate, but nothing at the local township level.

I'm trying to be an informed voter, but it's hard. It's like the system wants me to stay ignorant.

The system does want you to stay ignorant. If you're ignorant, then a few dollars of advertising and good head of hair will win your vote. Or, at the very worst, you'd need to hear a buzzword or three.

Politicians hate voters who are informed, because they act all entitled and shit.

I always check out the League of Women's voters site. It seems to be the most comprehensive and widely-available source that is also (so far as I can tell) neutral.
