Wow, so I'm reading Kathy Griffin's memoir right now, and she writes a decent bit about Strickland's suicide. Apparently, they were very close and she adored him, and still keeps a picture of him with her. She also said that the producers wanted a 5 minute montage, but the network wanted it cut down. She was pissed. She actually felt like it was fairly uncool to have written the death into the show, but then more recently saw a late-night rerun of it and cried and felt like it was really well done.
I'm just finding the memoir fascinating overall (could not put it down last night; I predict finishing it tonight) and it intrigued me that I never think about this show (never really watched it) and yet, here you are posting about it and I'm reading about it all in like a week! :)
Fascinating to hear her take on it. I think while it would have hurt less at the time for the producers to NOT have written his death into the show, it probably to them felt almost creepy and disingenuous to just have him take another job or something, you know?
