Holy Suspension of Disbelief!

I watched Batman Begins a couple weeks ago (still have yet to see The Dark Knight but I will sooner or later) and I wasn't really that impressed. I thought it was good, but it was also rather predictable and produced more than a few unintentional laughs.

I know that most people really liked Batman Begins, whereas I was much less impressed. SO I ( Read more... )

You know, I can relate. Most of the superhero movies just seem silly, but in a non-funny sort of way. Cartoon versions seem to be a lot better, just because they don't have that same silly issue. I did like Batman Begins though, for the most part. At least compared to other superhero movies.

I didn't like Casino Royale at all though. They took the cool James Bondy stuff out and were left with a run-of-the-mill movie.

It seems to depend on the way the film is done. If the character backend is weak, then the other flaws in the physical properties of the universe (or its residents) become substantially more apparent. When it came to Batman Begins, I was rather troubled by the character of Rachel Dawes (as portrayed somewhat awfully by Katie Holmes). I was regularly dragged from the film (kicking and screaming) by her inability to make me believe she was anything more than a paper thin damsel in distress.

Ed Norton was pretty badass as The Hulk, but since the entire movie sucked, I couldn't believe that he was actually Edward Norton, as the real Edward Norton wouldn't have taken such a crappy role. Though I think that's third- or fourth-tier disbelief.

And Bond is just...Bond. He flew into space and fought a dude attempting to oblitierate the planet just for the heck of it. And then there was Jaws.

"Dark and Gritty" is the new "Younger, Edgier." See: Flash Gordon.

I dunno, some of these movies are really good though. It's like the 90's when there was 65 million alternative rock bands. Sure, some of them sucked, but there was definitely some really memorable and classic stuff generated from that point in time. I think there that can be used analogously to the superhero movie phase going on now. For me I've enjoyed Ang Lee's version of The Hulk and Iron Man quite a bit. Ed Nortons Hulk was good too, but nothing compared to Ang Lee's.

Haven't gotten around to seeing Dark Knight yet, but it's so insanely over hyped now that I don't know if it'd ever live up to the expectation!
