26. EVERYONE
"Kiwan?" The name escaped Doojoon's mouth as he read his file. "Him?" His hands were trembling.
"I guess that explains why there's this too, huh?" Junhyung threw another newspaper at Doojoon. The black-haired boy picked it up, and the color drained from his face when he saw the first page.
"Why would they have the story on Kiwan's murder case...?" Doojoon didn't finish his sentence.
"Doojoonie?" Yoseob asked. When the tall boy didn't respond, he asked again, "Are you okay?"
"Mind your own business!" Doojoon scolded him, then returned his focus on the newspaper.
Yoseob's expression was hurt, and resumed reading his own portfolio. Kikwang seemed to be absorbed in his own life records, turning pale with every word he saw. Dongwoon was sitting down on the floor--his file in one hand, refusing to read it. Hyunseung only observed them without a word.
"I suppose they keep store the data of every patient they've previously had here," Junhyung gestured towards the large bookshelves.
"Kikwang?" Hyunseung asked. "What's wrong?"
Yoseob was distracted from his own file and approached the said boy. "Your brother, too?" he asked in disbelief as he peeked at Kikwang's file.
Kikwang looked up at them, his big eyes filled with astonishment. He didn't dare to nod; he didn't want to believe everything he just read.
"So Hyekwang received his treatment here? Why was he--this is ridiculous." Hyunseung threw up his hands in exasperation. "Are these files for real?"
"Well, most of the info there is pretty accurate," Junhyung said coldly.
They couldn't help admitting that he was right.
"So you stopped eating because of some pedophile, huh?"
Hyunseung glared at the brunette. "Don't start."
As if forgetting the fact that Hyunseung won in their fight on the first day here, Junhyung didn't stop. "It's not surprising that he made you wear dresses, since you look like such a girl," he said. "How was it, being kidnapped and starved for three days?"
"That's enough!" Hyunseung clenched his fists. "Don't talk like you're the only one without a problem here!"
Junhyung's expression darkened. "I'm different to all of you. I don't have problems. I had a girlfriend who died from AIDS, and that's all you need to know." And don't you start giving me crap for also having AIDS.
Dongwoon stared at him, silent. He was talking about escaping together a few minutes ago, so why the sudden change of attitude?
"And having 99.99% probability of getting lung cancer isn't a problem?" Hyunseung said with a scoff. "Suit yourself."
Junhyung frowned at him, but didn't say anything in return. He looked at the ceiling, searching for any cameras.
"So all of us know someone who's been here before?" Yoseob asked, moving on to another page. "But mine doesn't say anything about--" Then he remained speechless for a few minutes.
Doojoon ignored him, turning to Junhyung instead. "Then, why are you here?"
The brunette lit a cigarette. "I assume they chose me only because I'm a juvie regular," he said, blowing a smoke. Then he added under his breath, "I'll kill that police lady once I get out of here."
"But that's odd," Doojoon said with a frown. "There must be someone you know who used to be a patient here--"
"It doesn't say so in my file."
"So you really think they picked you for no specific reason?" Doojoon challenged.
Junhyung looked at him disdainfully. "Mr. Yoo did mention that we got picked by impartial lottery," he said. "Not that I believed that crap, but I know that the police have always wanted to get rid of troublemakers like me."
Doojoon noticed Dongwoon hadn't said much. "Dongwoon?" he asked.
"I'm not reading it," the maknae said, looking away from his neglected portfolio. "I don't want to remind myself of the past. It's painful enough."
Doojoon decided he shouldn't press further--after all, it wasn't any of his business.
Suddenly Yoseob threw his file on the floor. "No!"
"Yoseob?" Doojoon looked at him, surprised.
Yoseob pressed his hands against his ears, eyes shut. "No! How could she...?"
"What's wrong?" The tall boy asked, making his way towards him.
"How could she?" Yoseob repeated, shaking his head. Doojoon grabbed the file from the floor, confused. While reading the last page, his eyes widened all of a sudden.
"What the hell is wrong with him?" Junhyung asked, looking at Yoseob weirdly.
Doojoon said quietly. "His sister recommended him."
Junhyung raised his eyebrows. "...What?" Dongwoon held his breath in fear, and Hyunseung took Kikwang's hand protectively.
"It says right here, 'Reference: Older sister (Yang Haeyeon)'," the black-haired boy said. "Which means that she was the one who referred Yoseob to this place."
Before the others could react, Yoseob threw himself against the wall. "I knew it!" he cried. "She wanted to get rid of me!"
Hyunseung opened his mouth to say something, but decided to hold it in.
"She really wanted me killed, huh?" Yoseob clutched his head in frustration.
Kikwang whimpered at his words. Junhyung looked at the blonde guy quietly.
"Yoseob," Doojoon said, his voice careful. "I'm sure she didn't know that this place was--"
"How could she not?" Yoseob yelled at him. "She knew it! She did it on purpose!"
"She couldn't be that--" Before Doojoon could finish, Yoseob interrupted him.
"You don't know her!" The blonde gripped his collar. "You don't know how ruthless that bitch can be!" He looked desperate and frightened. "She can make everyone side with her! She can steal everything that belongs to me! She--" He stopped, his head hanging limp.
Doojoon bit his lips--it was too painful to watch Yoseob like this.
Suddenly Yoseob's lips curved slowly into a strange smile. "Noona, why do you hate me so much?" he muttered, lifting his head up.
Doojoon's face stiffened in alarm; he sensed something was not right.
"So it wasn't enough that you had Mom and Dad to yourself." There was a different tone to Yoseob's voice. "Maybe... maybe you shouldn't have been born at all."
The other five exchanged worried glances.
"If only you weren't born..." he started. "I wish you'd never existed!" With that, he pushed Doojoon to the floor.
"Yoseob!" Hyunseung yelled.
The blonde boy wasn't listening; he was screaming and throwing files around and pushing down the bookshelves. It was as if he went crazy.
"Hyung," Dongwoon whispered, frightened. He stole a glance at the Yoseob's file on the floor. He gasped at the big word printed in red, above the photograph of Yoseob's cheerful face: 'Dissociative'.
Junhyung charged at him, but Yoseob landed a punch on his stomach. The brunette fell on his knees. "Fucking hell!" But Yoseob wasn't finished--he started kicking Junhyung and landing countless punches on his face.
"Yoseob, don't!" Doojoon cried, clutching a bruised arm.
Junhyung held up his arms to defend against the attacks, clenching his teeth to hold in the pain.
"Yoseob, stop it!"
Kikwang clung to Hyunseung, scared.
Unable to bear it, Junhyung grabbed Yoseob's fist and gripped it tightly. The blonde's eyes widened in surprise, as if not expecting it. Junhyung suppressed his grip, and Yoseob winced. Then Yoseob used his free hand to hit the right side of Junhyung's head. The latter roared in pain. "You little--" He used all his remaining energy and slammed Yoseob against the wall.
"Stop it, you two!" Doojoon rushed after them, trying to intervene.
"I'll teach you a lesson!" Junhyung yelled at Yoseob furiously. "You piece of--"
"Die!" After saying this, Yoseob received a left hook from Junhyung.
"Take that!"
Finally Doojoon managed to separate the two, with much difficulty.
"I swear I'm gonna--" Junhyung didn't finish his words as Hyunseung and Dongwoon grabbed ahold of his arms.
"Yoseob!" Doojoon grasped his shoulders. The blonde's eyes were filled with unrecognizable wrath. Doojoon's heart was pounding as he tried to make Yoseob come to his senses. "Snap out of it!" he cried, despite numerous punches landing on his body. "It's me!" However, Yoseob continued to scream profanities at him. "Wake up!" Suddenly he pulled Yoseob into a tight embrace.
Junhyung stopped struggling; Dongwoon and Hyunseung slowly let go of their grip.
Yoseob's expression was blank, and he suddenly became quiet. Doojoon held his hands on Yoseob's cheeks. "Yoseob?"
"...Doojoon?" Everyone--except for Junhyung--sighed in relief as the familiar voice returned. "Where did I go?" The blonde looked around, confused.
"You're back." Doojoon smiled.
"I thought you were mad at me," Yoseob said, pouting. "You scolded me earlier."
Doojoon frowned. "What?"
"You're hurt!" Yoseob exclaimed when he saw the bruises. "What happened?"
"Forget it," Doojoon said.
Silence filled the room as they decided it was best to not let him know.
"Junhyung, too!" Yoseob clamped his own mouth shut in shock after looking at the red and purple marks on the brunette's face and arms.
They stayed quiet for his sake.
But suddenly Junhyung spoke up, "I see it now."
"Huh?" Doojoon turned to him in surprise.
"This is all a set-up, isn't it?"
Yoseob looked at him, frowning. "...What?"
"Pretending to be patients," the brunette scoffed. "You secretly knew about the experiments all along, didn't you?"
The others' eyes widened with shock.
"I wouldn't be surprised if you're all going to double cross on me in the end," he said again.
"What the hell are you talking about?" Doojoon said incredulously.
He cringed as Junhyung pushed him to the wall. "Quit the bullshit! I bet you've been siding with those evil bastards this whole time!"
Hyunseung rubbed his temple, as if exhausted. "Junhyung, you're being--"
"Shut up!" the brunette yelled at him, still gripping Doojoon's collar. "Since you have been here before, you would have had at least an idea about this place!"
"No!" Hyunseung shook his head. "The hypno--"
"You expect me to believe that crap?" Junhyung let go of Doojoon and walked over to the curly-haired boy. "How about this? You were kidnapped by some sick pedophile when you were little, then you came here to get treated, and then they released you on an agreement!"
"A-Agreement?" Hyunseung stammered. "What do you mean?"
"That you'd be some decoy!" Junhyung continued, then motioned to the others. "All of you!"
"Are you out of your mind?" Hyunseung cried. "Why are you accusing all of us based on that crazy theory?"
Junhyung clicked his tongue. "Think about it--you, Kikwang's brother, Dongwoon's cousin and that kid Doojoon was friends with were patients here! Not to mention that Yoseob's sister knew about this, too!"
Dongwoon flinched. "I honestly didn't know anything about Myunghee-noona being an ex-patient!"
"You better quit the act," Junhyung sneered. "You seriously want me to believe that you guys had absolutely no idea about this place and the experiments it holds on its patients?"
"But I don't know anyone who's been here before!" Yoseob retaliated. "Even if my sister knew about this place, I don't think she was a patient here..."
Doojoon raised his eyebrows. This time Yoseob's reaction was surprisingly mild; did he finally realize that his sister, probably, didn't send him here on purpose? It wasn't as if she knew how sick this place is, he thought. Besides, for such institution to have existed for such a long time, they must be hiding their existence from a lot of people. According to Junhyung's story, the police sent him here... which meant that the government was somehow involved.
Junhyung stared at the blonde, hard. "You," he scowled. "Stop pretending! You're with them on the whole thing, aren't you?"
"That's not even logical!" Yoseob cried. "You're talking nonsense!"
"I should really give applause for your believable acting!" Junhyung gave a mocking smirk. "Pretending to have a personality disorder... you wanted to kill me for real, right?"
They thought he'd gone crazy; he witnessed Yoseob's split personality himself, so how could he accuse the kid of such a thing?
Yoseob's face was filled with surprise and confusion. "Personality... disorder?"
Maybe all that nicotine clogged up his brain so he's not thinking straight? Hyunseung thought.
Junhyung added, "I bet that red room was a fake, too!"
The blonde's face turned pale.
"Red room?" It was the others' turn to get confused.
"And blowing up that guard," Junhyung raised his voice (Dongwoon's head snapped up at the word 'guard'), "that was you too, right?"
Yoseob's eyes widened. "Why would I--"
"There was no one around us at that time! Who else could've done it if it wasn't you?"
"Stop it!" Doojoon gripped Junhyung's arm. "If we really did lie to you like you said, then how are we supposed to believe that you're the only innocent one here?"
"What?" the brunette raised his eyebrows.
"You heard me," Doojoon said, trying to keep his voice calm. "You came up with all these allegations about us, but how do we know that it's not an act?"
Junhyung dropped his jaw as if he just heard the most ridiculous thing ever. "Don't be stupid," he said through gritted teeth, yanking his arm away.
"I'm not being stupid." Doojoon tightened his grip. "I'm being rational."
"What?" The brunette tried to wriggle free, but Doojoon wouldn't let go.
"No, he's right," Hyunseung spoke up. Next to him, Kikwang flinched in surprise. Junhyung's head snapped to their direction. "What if you're the mole? We don't know for sure that you're a normal patient like us." His face seemed determined. "For all we know, you could have been pretending all along."
"Don't you dare putting words into my mouth!" Junhyung said, clenching his fists.
"I'm simply trying to talk some sense into you." The anorexic tried not to show some fear, although Kikwang could see beads of cold sweat forming on his forehead. "You said you didn't know anyone who used to be patients here. What if your girlfriend was one?"
Junhyung's eyes widened. "No way! If she was, then it would've been mentioned in the file!" he yelled, pointing to his portfolio.
"What if the file has been manipulated?" Hyunseung suggested. "What if they purposefully changed things around to turn us against each other?"
"...What?" Junhyung shouted incredulously.
"You know, probably Kikwang's brother or Dongwoon's cousin were never patients... isn't it possible that they screwed up with the files just to mess with our mind?"
Doojoon thought what Hyunseung saying was right; Mr. Yoo knew their mental states very well, and it would be a piece of cake for him to make them all suspicious of each other. "That's true." I hope Kiwan wasn't an ex-patient here like the file said.
"You're just trying to cover up your own lies and plans, aren't you?" Junhyung was stubborn.
With a sigh Hyunseung continued, "And about that guard you mentioned... it could've been you who pulled the trigger. We know that in order to be able explode someone, you need to be in close distance for aiming." He shot a quick glance at Doojoon, who seemed to know what he was talking about: Sunggyu's gruesome death.
"That's right!" Yoseob added, looking at Junhyung angrily. "You must've had some sort of device with you, so you could wait for the right moment to blow him up!"
With that, all eyes in the room turned to look at Junhyung.
"You motherf--" Before Junhyung could finish his sentence, Doojoon pinned him to the ground. "Get off me!"
"Not until you can be reasonable and stop shouting baseless accusations!"
"I said, get off!"
Suddenly a loud bang was heard.
The brunette's eyes widened at the smoke coming out slowly from the floor to his left. Doojoon turned pale at the sight of the small, circle mark imprinted on the tile. Slowly, the five heads turned to the back of the room. Yoseob let out a gasp, and Kikwang dropped to his knees in shock.
Dongwoon was standing there, holding a pistol in one hand.
