First off, before I go into student teaching stories, I've gotta gloat about this weekend, and how awesome it was. Because finally (finally!!), after obsessing about it for two years, I got to see Wicked ( Read more... )

Yay! So glad to be helpful, even though I can't take full credit for it... I yoinked that exercise from my co-op when I was student teaching.
Helpful is a cheerful light blue
It looks like the perfect lesson
It smells like chalk and copier toner
It sounds like Miss White's sight of relief
It tastes like success
It feels like lifting the weight off another's shoulders
Helpful is giving a friend in need a much deserved break!
Smooches, babe!

WSell, all the same, thank you! And I think it's neat how things can get passed around from teacher to teacher like that. It's like a big train of sharingness. But I'm a dork, and think that's cool.
And thank you for my very own poem! Hooray! =)
*huggles* Hope all is well down there!

Oh, it's rather simple, but a fun activity. I had the kids do moods and feelings that were Poe-like, but you could use any of them. Sort of like what Meg just did up there for Helpful. You write a poem using similes and a lot of sense words to describe a feeling. It starts off with a simple simile, then uses senses to paint a picture, then ends with a metaphor. Here's another example, mine from the other day that I demonstrated with my kids:

Frustration is like a cloud suddenly overtaking the sun
It looks like a door, closed and padlocked tight
It sounds like a whimper, a muted scream into a pillow
It feels like elephants stampeding across my brain
or the uncertain quiver in a deep breath
It smells like a muggy summer day,
saturated with impending failure
Frustration is empowering

Simple enough! I talked a little bit about how I created it, asked them for some moods and examples, and then set them loose, and they really seemed to enjoy it!
Go forth and spread the lesson love! =)
