Angry at American Girl

I just got an e-mail alert the other day from American Girl. (Yes, yes, I am 25 years old, but I am a doll collector, and I have always loved that collection of dolls...until now anyway.) The PTB there have decided "it is time to retire Samantha and her entire collection to the American Girl Archives ( Read more... )

Heck yes (hence the subject)!!!! American Girl is making a huge mistake. Honestly, I think Samantha's stories are best of all (I've read them thirty bazillion times) and so are her clothes. And, the doll is, well, I like her a lot better than Julie.
My theory is that they believe that her time period wasn't as important as the others. They can't get rid of the Revolutionary War...or the Civil War...then again, 1904 was important. Wayyyyyy more important than the seventies anyway!
I really hope it is for publicity. It's bad and all, but not as bad as losing Samantha!

I agree with you on the "not as bad as losing Samantha." But yes, 1904 is quite important to learn about. It's also more interesting to me than for instance, the 1970's, because it is quite different from now.

I completely agree with you! I'm 18 years old, and still love American Girl (and yes, Samantha was always my favorite!). Needless to say, this news really pissed me off :[

I miss the old American Girl, when it was so amazing!

I miss the old American Girl too. I'm a little annoyed at Pleasant T. Rowland, the creator of it. I know she did what was best for her, but still...it wasn't what was best for this company. The company was a lot more special under her leadership than it is now. Now it's treated like an assembly-line cash cow, with only the newest and what they think will sell having any value.

Ironically, it's this very attitude that collector's have picked up on, and that's why pre-Mattel items are worth a lot more than their more recent counterparts. You'd think they'd know that. All it takes is going on ebay to figure that out.
