There are parts of New York where I think it's OK. When I lived there, I always felt relatively safe in the neighborhoods that are crowded. Where there are families sitting out on the stoops enjoying the evening, and kids playing on the quieter streets, and students and club kids going about their nocturnal business. A lot of Manhattan and many parts of Brooklyn and some of the denser neighborhoods in Queens, like the main drags of Astoria, are like that. Took me a LONG time to get used to Chicago after that, because people seem less street-social and streets with no people bug me. :)
