I'd argue that if you're popular enough to have your weblog read by 50+ readers, you may be able to make a difference. Likely as not, though, you'd be preaching to people who've already been preached at and won't care what you say.

As to saying "blog" rather than "weblog," I think the nickname is too ingrained in society to change, no matter how stupid it sounds.
