She unboxed and booted it up while, beside her, I napped in bed. After five minutes of clicking sounds, she asks, "how do I change the wallpaper in Windows 7?"

I rarely have that sinking feeling. But, it followed a vague memory and preceded a web search turning up a blog post from the Windows Team engaging in damage control:

... who decides which Windows OS goes on the box.

But, really, not being able to play DVDs? So, it appears that the netbook already has XP on it.

Actually, it's capitalism, extracting the highest amount the consumer is willing to pay for the least amount of value.

Or, it's me, because I should have known better and made sure she got Home Premium.

But it's more the idea of arbitrary restrictions-- ones that the average person will care about.

Hmm, I'd hope the version of Windows 7 UW gave out to us for free isn't just some watered down version. (haven't gotten around to installing it yet)

I'm still running XP, and in the meantime I placed this standee at the front of our house to scare off people.

2 words, sir. Hackintosh notebook. $300 bought off craigslist, already set up and ready to roll. Or you can buy it yourself for closer to $200 and wade thru the well-documented process.
