So it's only been about a month since my cat passed away. I'm certainly not ready for a new cat, but my parents feel different

Sorry to hear about your cat passing away! That's really rough. Mur died of feline lukemia a week before christmas last. She was diagnosed 2 weeks prior, and it was just dreadful watching her waste away. I cried pretty hard several times. But all does move forward, and we too have an absolutely love young cat that goes by Pasha. She loves water, and will play in the sink while we brush our teeth.
