Something that is deeply frustrating to me is how we have these female fandom powerhouses and theoretically that should be a good jumping-off point for demanding wider and more varied representation in media. I think this is all really true, and I definitely know a lot of people in fandom who consider themselves feminists, but to different degrees. A lot of them are also just not versed in higher-level humanities discourses about intersectionality, and it's hard, because being an elitist jerkass just makes things worse, but that can also make discussions about racism/transphobia/queerphobia and how they're connected to feminism as a whole even more difficult ( ... )

I am kind of lucky that my immediate sphere of fannish space is generally pretty lady positive. Even though I sort of walk the line between slash communities and het or f/f super feminist communities; it creates a kind of interesting mix.

I think what I meant by my Buffy reference is that I want a series to come along that hits the narrative beats that Buffy did, and was allowed to be campy and dark and funny and sad and epic. I want something that actually knows how to balance plot and character. Everything is problematic, and I'm definitely there with you on asking for something to be better than its predecessors. However, I maintain that Buffy did things that were amazing that simply haven't been seen since then. It may be that storytelling conventions are changing so I'm just not noticing it? But I feel like we haven't even seen a show in years that does the good things Buffy did. I mean, that show created a new cultural mythos surrounding a female lead - we've come close with Katniss Everdeen, but we haven't really seen a ( ... )
