It wasn't a bad idea in say the 1800s... I suppose I can understand a chaperoning presence, but I at least am of the opinion that you really ought to get to know somebody well before marriage comes into the picture, not vice versa.

Exactly. All that. It might be a bit till I can move out though, since I'm behind in high school and I've got to finish it soon. If I'm extremely lucky, I'll graduate next year.
I have a friend who believes that she can't date a boy until she's already married to him, so it could be worse?
I really disagree with this policy, though, because A) it takes away your choice to an extent, and B) what if that guy acts good around your chaperon but is actually a wife beater? (although given your dad's stance on wife beaters...)
But yeah, I'm of the opinion that dating is better than courting.
