Yes, I am behind in my Harlequinfetus emulation. Perhaps I set my sights too high in the first place by trying to emulate someone as amazing and brilliant and actually possessed of a good background with which to apply ( Read more... )

I find it interesting that your dad going to Princeton did not give you enough oomph with admissions. If I learned anything from Gilmore Girls it is that having your parents go to one of those Ivy League schools actually means something! Granted, it was forever and a day ago that your dad actually went there, and you have some (obviously not insurmountable, grats!) obstacles in the way or acceptance into your specific degree track. But still!

Did you show them a picture of your dad? Did you show them a picture of your cat?

I really was hoping that I would magically end up getting into Princeton entirely through the Old Boy's Club, even though I would likely have felt deep shame as a result. But I suspect it is easier to use family-alumnus-status to get into an undergraduate program, and also that my dad not being one of those super-uppity-Ivy-League people undoubtedly meant he did not maintain the right list of cigar-smoking smoking-jacket jacket-wearing contacts in the program. But yeah, if I had, you know, actually done anything truly worthwhile in school before the last couple of years, that would have helped too.

Harvard's application actually had an entire page with a list of 50-odd questions gauging who you knew/were related to that went to Harvard in the past, though it seemed like a lot of them were involved with endowed scholarships and other things. But I am pretty sure a few of them were "so, did your dad go here or what?"

Perhaps enclosing a picture of my dad superimposed on my cat would have done the trick.
