IC Information:
Name: Jade Harley
Fandom: Homestuck
Timeline: Right after
This conversation with John, before she starts breeding frogs.
Age: 13
Appearance: The first thing to notice about Jade is hair -- she's got a lot of it, black hair that falls well past her shoulders. When she sits down, it curls around her on the ground. She's fairly short since she hasn't yet hit puberty, and still pretty much has the body of a prepubescent kid. Her eyes are BRIGHT GREEN just like the text she types in. In fact, it's the exact same shade of green. She wears glasses. Her two front teeth stick out slightly over her bottom lip, and she's usually smiling. But all in all, she looks like a normal, human girl around the age of 13 or 13 and a half.
Abilities:
• Sharpshooter. Jade has been training with guns since she was almost too young to be handling them. It's a family legacy, one that she's proud to uphold -- Jade is an excellent shot, adept at caring for and handling all sorts of weapons. She's just as skilled with her favorite weapon (her rifle) as she is with pistols and even harpoon guns.
• An uncanny knack for guessing things on the first try, especially when it comes to locating hidden objects. She is a master of the card game Memory.
• Some sort of magic involving plants and music. While it isn't specifically stated as a part of Jade's role in SBURB, she is able to make plants grow eerily fast using her music (though it has to be good music -- when she plays the flute horribly, nothing happens). Jade can also use this ability to move plants; she rearranges giant lilypads using her bass guitar and an amp in order to hop across them. Even without music to help her plants grow, she seems to have a green thumb of sorts, and always likes to keep flowers and vegetables around her.
• Intelligence. Despite being thirteen year old, Jade enjoys dabbling in things like nuclear physics. She's actually quite handy with mechanics, creating a bunny robot with artificial intelligence and receiving only minimal help from her future penpal. She enjoys tinkering, and has an entire section of her room devoted to her projects, or things that she's fixing or changing to make work again.
• Optimism. Though not necessarily a physical, magical, or intellectual ability, Jade is able to think the best of people, even the Big Bad Jack Noir. She may get exasperated at times, but she's quick to return to positive thinking, planning ahead and setting a goals. Jade is nice to those who are nice to her, and makes friends easily.
• Sylladex
-- Essentially, a sylladex is a place removed from space and time that allows its owner to store objects in a place that no one else can access (this is assumed, as no person has ever grabbed an object out of another person's sylladex). Jade's sylladex is based around children's board games: it's originally set to Memory, and then later changed to Pictionary, though there are several other options for her modus (or the way she can retrieve/store items). A sylladex comes with a certain number of cards -- Jade has at least 9, though might have up to around 20 (but definitely has more storage space than any of the other kids).
-- Jade can carry around objects in her sylladex, and even carry around pets (John carries around Casey, a salamander). But anything too big (such as a car, or a giant wizard statue) cannot be stored in there, but it is dependent on the modus. Jade's can hold things up to the weight of a fully-functional, human-sized robot.
Personality:
Jade is described in canon as “a very silly girl.” That is for the most part, true. Most of her time outside of Sburb is spent indulging in fun things, like talking to her friends online and playing her eclectic bass or her tangle buddies. She is happy, usually putting a positive outlook on things, and is very rarely exasperated. This is expressed in the way she types. There, exclamation points abound, as well as smiley faces. Rarely does she forgo these, even when she’s angry (in fact, she almost uses MORE exclamation points when she’s upset). Jade tries to be friendly and welcoming when she can, because she believes in the fact that niceness should be reciprocated. When people are nice to her (or when she believes they can be nice), she is friendly and sociable. However, when they are annoying and angry (read: Karkat), Jade can get testy and irritable as quickly as anyone else. She doesn’t like to dwell in unhappiness, though, so her general demeanor is one of a cheerful girl that's willing to attempt to make friends with most anyone. Jade is very much a person that believes in putting bad things behind her, but sometimes she gets a little caught up in situations. If someone explains her anger to her, she's quick to realize her mistakes and apologize for them. But if left to her own devices, she can get stuck on negative feelings rather easily, especially when it comes to the trolls.
Jade is fairly naive. She grew up somewhat sheltered, living on an island with mainly her dog Becquerel for company, since her grandfather gained an appreciation for wanderlust and took off to explore the world. He was shot when Jade was young, leaving her alone to stuff him and take care of herself, except for Becquerel. Bec isn’t just a dog, but rather a guardian of Earth. He is omnipotent and very caring, but it still makes for a lonely childhood of sorts. Jade doesn’t seem upset by this. In fact, it takes a lot to get her to admit her faults. This is something she struggles with in the comic in a rather roundabout way, through her prototyping of Jadesprite. The anger and resentment she feels for her sprite is actually a hatred of those same qualities in herself; Jade hates feeling useless, and believes that despite what people say she can be helpful in some way. But her sense of the unfairness of life is small, and she tends to rely on her dreams and her dog rather than common sense. Jade also doesn’t understand popular culture references (except for Dave’s comics, which she reads religiously in a non-ironic way). She doesn’t always understand her friends’ jokes, but laughs anyway, as a good friend and supporter should. Don’t mistake her naivety for dim wits. Jade might overlook the grim details, but she is extremely intelligent. Her favorite things to do include dabbling in nuclear physics and gadgetry, of all things. She has used her time to her advantage, cultivating her talents. Jade has many unusual skills for a girl of thirteen, since she was taught by her grandfather at a young age to appreciate the thrill of the hunt and other various things, like science. While she may not be culturally in the know, Jade knows enough in her own fields to make up for that. In addition, she's of a mind to survive -- when faced with a seemingly impossible situation, she fights with tooth and nail to continue living on. Jade doesn't quit for anything, and is willing to keep fighting until she physically can't any more. She only gives up when there's nothing else left that she can do.
Jade has a problem with falling asleep in strange locations; this is frequently put down to a severe case of narcolepsy. It is debated that she might never actually fall asleep like a normal person, which is probably true -- Vriska put her to sleep when she was young, and kept forcing her to sleep at random intervals. She can’t control where she falls asleep; in canon, she almost seems to have a knack for falling asleep at the WORST times, like right after she’s transported into the medium and when she’s trying to sneak by her grandfather in the grand foyer. Jade presumably never knows that she’s fallen asleep (though when asked, her dream robot will admit that she probably is). People tend to make fun of her for this, but the only time this ever gets on her nerves is when it’s insults from the trolls, most of whom Jade detests. She is the only one of the kids to actually count all twelve trolls at first, and is presumably the one that they first made contact with (and the one that they contact the most, though these conversations aren’t always shown in pages). Jade may prefer optimism to anger, but that doesn’t make her immune. She is angry first and remorseful second -- her first reaction to people not doing what she thinks they should is impatience. She has a lot of things that she believes should happen, and when people butt heads with her it makes her a little perturbed. Karkat certainly got on her nerves long before the series started, causing Jade to block him on Pesterchum. Karkat finds a way to get around the block, much to Jade’s chagrin, and they continue their arguments. Her anger generally takes its form in a manner of ignoring whoever makes her mad, though she doesn’t often show true rage. When she does, it’s almost like a complete snap in personality. When Karkat and future!Karkat get into an argument in a chat (via freaky time shenanigans) Jade reverts to angry words and expletives, shocking the pair of them. This doesn’t happen often, but that’s probably a good thing; most people don’t expect it of her, since it’s so rare. She can curse like a sailor and smack people around with the most angry of them. However, recently she wonders if her reasons for getting angry at them in the past were justified, and onsiders the fact that they might genuinely be trying to help her, despite their brusque conversations; Jade decides to overlook a good deal of their flaws in order to attempt to see their real personalities. She does this even with Jack Noir, the Big Bad of the Homestuck world. Though he still gets on her nerves, she actually doesn't mind him being around, citing that perhaps killing everyone isn't the only thing he's capable of. And after all, if she takes care of him, it keeps other people from potentially dying. She looks danger in the face and swears that she won't back down from it, more than a little reckless at times. Running into danger in order to save her friends or to complete her mission is something that Jade is more than willing to do.
Since Jade has been awake on Prospit, the dream world closest to Skaia, for as long as she can remember, she often seems to be much of a dreamer. Because of her dream self, Jade has received visions of the future through Skaia’s clouds, telling her to do things that are important to her friends’ quests. When she wakes up from these dreams, she arranges her thoughts by tying pieces of multicolored string to her fingers, to help her to remember certain events. Most of her friends find her to be a little bit eerie and secretive, since she often knows things that they haven’t yet told her. Jade refuses to share anything more than is necessary with her friends about their futures, exclaiming that if she tells them, they will “mess it all up.” Despite that, she wishes all of her friends the best, becoming the main cheerleader of the group as the story progresses. Mostly, she just wants to make sure her friends are alright -- Jade Harley is a girl who cares for her friends more than anything, and would do everything in her power to keep them safe. She's a hero when she needs to be, but always in a way that helps her friends the most; her ideas can be a bit uncanny at times, and genius at others. As the last person to enter the medium, Jade is left out of the loop to some extent. Despite this, she doesn’t stop believing in her friends. She nudges them in the right directions, knowing that they’ll bring her up to speed eventually.
History:
Jade Harley is a cheerful, somewhat out of touch girl who lives on an island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. She lives alone, with only the aid of her guardian, the dog Becquerel. When she was younger, her Grandpa Harley also lived with her. But he died in a tragic accident involving a misguided bullet. Grandpa was then stuffed by the smaller Jade and placed in a dignified position in front of the hearth. Since then, it's been Jade and Bec on the island by themselves, though Jade has enjoyed talking to Grandpa as if he were alive. Her home life has always been a little strange; she grew up surrounded by mummies, pictures stolen from beauty parlors, and suits of armor. Jade is very eclectic, just like her house and her Grandpa before her -- she has a large number of interests, and spends most of her time frolicking around her island.
Or at least she did. Before there were meteors.
On April 13, 2009, Jade and her three friends (John Egbert, Rose Lalonde, and Dave Strider) decide to play a video game named SBURB. Or rather, her three friends decide to play -- Jade simply knows that this is a momentous day, thanks to what her friends believe is a gift in prophetic foresight. She doesn't even have a copy of the game disks until they show up via time shenanigans in the Frog Temple that is placed in the center of her island. Instead, she seems to accomplish a number of ridiculous tasks while her friends engage in life-threatening scenarios involving fire and death. She feeds her dog (who is not just a dog, but rather the First Guardian of Earth, an omnipotent hellhound who can warp Space and Time) some lightly irradiated steak, and pesters all of her friends to casually remind them of things that they will need to know later. It's not that she is any more psychic than John is -- she actually says this in canon -- it's just that Jade Harley has been awake on the moon of Prospit for as long as she can remember. This moon is one of two that circle a planet called Skaia, which exists in the Incipisphere, part of the territory of SBURB. Prospit is the moon closest to Skaia -- so close in fact, that when Jade's tower on Prospit passes close to the planet, the clouds of Skaia provide the dreamers that are currently awake with visions. These visions can be of past, present, or future events, and rarely ever come in complete pictures. Jade uses her dreambot, a robot created by her Grandpa Harley, to record the visions and comb through them later. When she figures out an important event that she or one of her friends must complete, she records it by tying a string around her finger. These colorful reminders help Jade to know what she must do in the upcoming days, and at the start of SBURB on April 13 she has several to keep her on schedule.
A lot of SBURB before Jade enters is completely unknown to her; Jade spends a good amount of her time asleep on Prospit. She awaits the time when John, the other Derse dreamer, finally wakes up. When she's not asleep or wandering around as her dreambot, Jade is off doing other things that she must complete -- she has seen in her visions that she has to leave many notes for the exiles of the future, to aid them on their quests. So she waits for Bec to fall asleep and ventures to the Frog Temple, where she receives both the SBURUB copies and sets up the scenario for the pawns that arrive there hundreds of years in the future. But that's not to say that she isn't asleep for a long time. Jade becomes Dave's server player (or the player that aids in setting up the needed equipment in order to play SBURB) and manages to do most of this while completely asleep, much to Dave's chagrin. He finally manages to wake her up by getting her robot to punch her in the face, knocking her out of her bed and onto the floor. But not before Jade's dreamself prototypes Dave's kernel (or his guide for the game) with a useless, dead crow (essentially setting up what will later become Davesprite).
After Jade handles Dave's entry into the medium, she settles down to fall asleep again, staying awake on Prospit since she knows that John's awakening is close at hand. She is trusted with the Ring of the White Queen and told to take it to the White King on Skaia, a quest that Jade treats with great solemnity. She even beats an evil Derse pawn up when he tries to attack her, knowing the importance of giving the ring over. Except what Jade doesn't know is that while she's busy frolicking in the dream world, shit's going down. One of the citizens of the moon Derse, named Jack Noir, has killed the Black Queen (or the ruler of the moon) and stolen her ring. While a human wearing the ring has absolutely no effect, a pawn wearing the ring gives that carapace creature immeasurable power that's directly linked to the first prototypings of the kids' kernel sprites. So along with the wings and sword through the chest of the dead bird that Jade prototyped for Dave, Jack Noir gains the appearance of the one-armed jester and the tentacled cat princess that John and Rose prototype, respectively. With these powers plus the innate magical power of the ring itself, Jack soars to the battlefield of Skaia and wreaks havoc there, killing thousands of warring pawns and ruining the earth. After he gets bored, he flies to the home of his mortal enemies -- that is, Prospit, whose White royalty have been at war with the Black royalty of Derse for an eternity. Jack corrupts Prospit and tears it into pieces, sending Jade and the sleeping dreamself of John spiraling down towards Skaia. Jade decides to take action -- she pushes John out of the way of the crashing ruins, saving his dreamself and killing her own in the process.
When a dreamer's dreamself dies, they fall asleep and wake up in what is later to be known as dream bubbles, creations of the gods of the furthest ring that were made on a deal with Feferi, a troll. Jade meets Feferi in one of these dream bubbles not once but twice, both times thinking that she was more than a little freaky. When she wakes up from her post-dreamself death, she finds that John has hooked up to her SBURB game as her server player, and helps her set up all the things she needs to enter the Medium. And oh, is her entry important. Because Jade's entry will give Jack Noir the final powers he needs, a troll named Vriska puts John (the person in charge of prototyping Jade's kernel sprite) to sleep so that Jade's omnipotent, space-warping dog is forced to jump into the kernel to save her. This creates not only Becsprite, a powerful but canine SBURB guide, but also Bec Noir, the ultimate villain.
Jade wakes up in the Land of Frost and Frogs, a snow-covered world with a giant volcano. She is now officially the Witch of Space, responsible for creating the new universe which the kids would have been the gods of, was their session not royally fucked. A lot of her first moments in the Medium are spent quickly alchemizing new outfits and weapons with the help of Dave, who realizes that John (due to dying and ascending to god tier) is unable to aid Jade as her server player any more. Using her new creations (such as the ectogoggles!), she locates not only her friends in the Medium, but also the body of Bro (who died in a fight with Bec Noir); she is able to see anything going on in the present moment throughout the Incipisphere. But the novelty eventually wears off, and Jade is left wondering what to prototype her kernelsprite with for the second time. So she does what any reasonable person would do: considering the fact that her dog is an omnipotent beast, and leaning on the pride she has in herself, Jade throws her (deceased, stuffed) deamself into Becsprite, creating Jadesprite.
Only...yeah no, Jadesprite was pretty much an all-around failure. She refused to cooperate with Jade, crying and moping about Prospit without actually knowing the whole story. This pisses Jade off, and eventually lead to her screaming at Jadesprite about how worthless she was. Jade couldn't believe that a person who was once Jade Harley could be so cowardly, but Karkat was quick to remind her that the hatred she felt for her sprite self was remarkably similar to Karkat's anger towards his past self, which Jade condoned. As Jade realized that, she felt bad about denying that part of her, and somewhat apologized to Karkat (placing them on better terms than before, when he had trolled her mercilessly about fucking up her session).
Since Jadesprite had fled to be alone, Jade was without a guide for her quest and her session. Sensing that Jade might need help, a troll named Kanaya stepped in to advise her on what to do as a Space player. Kanaya had created the kids' universe, with the help of Karkat, and was knowledgeable on the method to breed the universe. Jade took her advice readily, building up her house to reach the next gate and also to deploy the breeding equipment on top of her house. As she's nearing the start of her breeding process, Jade pesters John, trying to get in touch with him for the first time since he ascended to god tier. She finally contacts him and they chat about the future, as well as John's immortality and Karkat's shipping wall (which, according to the troll, the kids were logically supposed to follow in order to create the new human species). Jade helped John find his dad's location by looking for Dad in the sooth googles, and then they parted ways, leaving John to go find his long lost father and Jade to start attempting to create a new universe with the help of a few thousand frogs and her new troll friend.
Roleplay Sample - Log:
The walls in this place were so white and boring.
Jade stared at them intently, trying to remember her room at home. It felt like ages since she'd last slept under her domed bedroom ceiling, colorful posters lining the walls and beautiful patterns adorning them when she woke up on Prospit. But here, they were plain -- and though she wanted to believe that white could have some sort of calming effect, right now they were simply irritating her. She stuck her tongue out at the expanse of white, crossing her arms over her chest.
"Yeah well, you're stupid too!"
The wall said nothing. Of course it didn't; it was a wall, with no intentions of doing anything but standing there. Standing up, she dug in her pockets for her combative weapon of choice. Jade had managed to steal a crayon from somewhere (blue, not green, but right now she didn't care) and she brandished it at the wall as one might a sword. Her movements were deft. Jade left curlicued pictures of her friends, Prospit, LOFAF, her tower and her island. All of them were jumbled together, the tops of Prospitian towers cut off where she had to jump to reach, the clouds a little wobbly as she stood on her toes. But still, it was a world -- a beautiful one, she thought, dropping the remain of the crayon on the ground. Jade backed up to view her masterpiece, one that had taken almost the entire crayon to complete. It was great; Jade beamed at the wall, proud of her drawings.
But they'll be gone by next week...
She sighed, remembering the fact that not everything she did was irreplaceable. The crayon would disappear, covered up by more white, more dull and impassive color. The blue was wasted, a temporary reprieve to the boredom of the wall. Jade took her drawing in and put her hands on her hips, defiant.
If they were going to take her masterpiece away, then she'd just have to draw it again next week.
Bigger.

This game includes horrible mental and physical torture of your character. After reading the rules/faq for clarification, how do you expect your character to handle this and continue to function? Jade has already been through several traumatizing things in her own canon -- from dying to seeing her own friend lying dead on the ground, as well as dealing with the implications that they destroyed the world and can't fix it. Jade's personality is such that she always charges forward through bad things, only letting fear and pain set her back occasionally. She will push bad things aside and continue to put on an optimistic face, if only because her friends need her to be the one they come to for support. Really, she'll charge forward because she believes she's meant to.
