With a Moo-Moo Here

I’m still poking around with Farming Simulator 2013. I’ve imported a few simple Blender-created models, and that’s probably where I’ll draw the line. Reverse-engineering its animation system so I can create an actual vehicle with moving parts looks to be too steep a challenge, so I’m checking out other players’ creations.

Mods have addressed the ( Read more... )

"... only to realize it’ll pretty much never be broadly appealing until the gameplay is simplified to FarmVille levels and the 3D and modding are driven out completely."

I'd love to play a game that's just a little differently-placed on that axis. I want the version of this game that's running more akin to The Sims; with a farm that'll kind of run itself suboptimally without your intervention, but you control the growth, and hiring people, and you can manually guide particular bits to make them work really well when it interests you.

I am amazed that this game is popular enough to attract so much modding! I guess it doesn't take as much any more. :)

It's far more popular in Europe than it is in the U.S. The majority of mods I've seen come out Germany, the U.K., and the Netherlands. Also, the company made earlier versions of the game with the same framework in 2011 and 2008, plus other simulation-style games, so the talent has had a while to accumulate.

There's a segment of hobbyists who love technical accuracy in model cars, trains, planes... They have a field day with this stuff. There's a mod that makes you have to switch the ignition on when you climb into a tractor instead of auto-starting it. There are modded tractors that get dirty as they're used, and an officially-released power-washer you can download to spray them clean again. It's an eye-opener.

Hee! It hadn't occurred to me that the same kind of mindset that loves building model railroads would apply to virtual scenery too, but it makes sense. :D
