Very interesting - thanks for sharing that. Only one of my three was born via emergency c-section, but I currently have a friend who has scheduled her first baby's birth. It's just so strange to me - to book an appointment like that. I don't want to judge, I don't want to judge...but articles like this frustrate me - that there's this kind of information out there for consideration, and yet I doubt she would give it a second thought.

I think this info is new and has yet to make it into most women's minds when they are thinking about birth options. But there are other things out there - like the well-documented risk of spinal headaches that comes with epidurals - that most people don't think about even though the risks have been known for ages.

I don't want to judge, either, but sometimes...

It makes sense - the flora the baby is colonized with in the birth canal is really important IMO and I think there is also a correlation with allergies and csection birth (though with both of those things I also think environment has a lot to do with it - i.e., that it's not just one thing but a combination of factors that make certain people susceptible to getting those diseases).

They did mention in the article that allergic parents meant a child is at more of a risk than that posed by being born by cesarean. A lot of kids would end up asthmatic no matter what. But I wonder if this information, which is still new, but pretty conclusive, will make in onto the radar for women who are making choices about how to give birth.

I sent the article to John after you posted it, and he said, "Well, I wonder how much of it has to do with BFing, too. Because women who have c/s have a lower rate or BFing, so that could also affect the baby's immune system."

Made me so proud. :)

does not surprise me....does make me a little sad, though. although i do think poor jesse did not have a fighting chance not to have asthma with dave's history and jesse's prematurity and the c-section.

i cannot understand why anyone would opt for a c-section for no good reason with articles like this out there.

Yes, they did mention that having allergic/asthmatic parents was a greater risk than a cesarean birth. Jesse might have had it coming no matter what. He's still a fabulously sweet and smart kid!
