So at work, we're already on 7 hour days (35 hour weeks). Today the bosses announced that we're now having across the board a 5% pay cut-- every single company employee

That totally sucks for your friend, is there anyway she can put it off to have those things? I mean... weddings can just be in the middle of nowhere with a judge but if she had all those plans I would think the day would mean more to her.
How long has it been 7 hour days? Is it indefinite? That totally blows.
Her wedding isn't until October, which is still a way away, but you just got married-- you know. There's so much that needs to be done in advance. She's cutting costs wherever possible (she and the bridesmaids will have real flowers, but all the rest will be artificial, trying to find people we know to do the cake, etc) but dresses aren't cheap, cake and flowers aren't cheap, and reception halls certainly aren't cheap (and thus may need cut entirely). It's just tough. She already had her dress and she had to cancel it--now besides the cancel fee, she's going to miss out on the sale the dress was under when she first bought it

This last week my job did a ton of layoffs and cutting people to half time. I'm mostly unaffected (although the 35 hour work week is still in effect for me - but it's better than 21), but one of my close friends was let go. Also, Dad works for HP and they just announced a 5% pay cut across the board this last week. I've mostly been trying not to freak out and get all paranoid, but it's kinda hard.
I'm not going to complain about things too much, because I know other people are in far worse places than I am. But, you know, all this crap isn't exactly going according to my plan.
To be honest, anyone who lives in Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, etc knew a long time ago that even if there wasn't a national economic crisis, there was a local one. We've lost tons of jobs from automakers, tool and die workers, steel industry, whirlpool, kitchen-aide, panasonic, DHL, and the list just goes on. This shit has been hitting the fan in our area for ages, it's not like we're surprised. The banking issues and stock market problems are the only real surprise. It's just bad because there really isn't much to do but hunker down and hope for the best.
