And it's so shameful for you to be mugged Mr. Smith that we won't even print your name in the newspaper, because we like to increase the stigma. If you were murdered, that's different. Journalistically, we debated and debated that issue in college. :)
My kids are reading "To Kill a Mockingbird" and we talked briefly about rape the other day (the crime in the book) and why rape is such a huge issue, and we briefly touched on the idea of the victim "causing" the rape by what they wear. The kids were (thankfully) appalled.
How old are the kids you teach? It's good to hear that you brought it up in class, and that they were appalled. Victim blaming is so "acceptable" it's ridiculous.
I teach freshmen, which may have been a tad too early, but I don't think that I could teach that book without bringing up the idea of why the crime is such a bad thing. :)
Thank you for posting this; it's important to get this sort of thing out where it can be seen, over and over again, until it sinks into our collective human consciousness.
