Attention sock knitters

I was thinking about the ridiculous cost of sock wool the other day, and what a pity that Bendigo Woollen Mills didn't do a sock yarn, so I thought I'd write to them and ask whether they had any plans, stressing that sock knitting is a big thing and there's certainly a market in Australia for locally produced wool that doesn't cost $25+ for a ball.

Good news, thanks. After I get through some of my current stash I might check this out. Am thinking I might knit some socks for Papa if I get that far. Fawn and dark grey I think. He is not much of a bright colours kind of guy.

Bendigo Knitting Mills are quite letter with a stamp on it types. I've noticed that phoning orders through is more appreciated than fax.

You would think they could at least make it in white so you could dye it yourself :) But yes this news should be passed along. Are you on ravelry? That would be the best place to get this info out to a large group of aussie knitters.

I've just been using the regular wools or cotton from Bendigo. They work out even cheaper than the sock wool at $11 or so for 200g. I got sent a sample chart recently for a range called Harmony which looks to be a good mix for socks - 30%wool, 69.6%cotton,0.4%lycra. Rather subtle stone washed colours. It only comes in 8ply though but it is a thinnish 8ply.

It's annoying that the really cunning sock yarn is so expensive. Since I do all my ordering online I never would have found out about their sock yarn. You will have to tell us how it works out.

The sockwool is more expensive in terms of grams, but cheaper in terms of yardage (meterage?) - which I guess is usually the case for fine yarns. I assume that you're paying for the processing as well as the wool.

I'll do an order and buy some of the fawn to see if it overdyes.
