In Islamic countries, throwing a shoe is a big insult. e.g. people threw shoes at a statue of Saddam when he was ousted.

XD I know. Which makes me laugh even harder because I listened to the President's reaction afterward and he didn't get it. He even went so far as to say "A guy threw his shoes at me. So what? I don't see what his beef was."

Grammatically bad paraphrasing aside, the journalist who threw them even said "This is your farewell present, you dog! This is for the widows and children whose families you destroyed."
