Why Steampunk

I have loved Victorian things ever since I can remember. When I was a small child I remember watching The Price is Right and desperately wanting the kids Victorian furniture they would give away. At one point I had told my grandfather I wanted a playhouse He asked me what I would like a playhouse to look like. So I drew a picture of a Victorian ( Read more... )

I've noticed this as well, ans is mainly why I don't participate in many steampunk (or goth) events or forums. I really feel you should post this in steamfashion though. You may get some flack, but really, I feel maybe it will help open some eyes and make them look at how their actions effect the community as a whole.

*hug*

I really can't wait to see your steamy baroness! The Outlanders (and myself) will be at Mega! I'm so excited to visit Orlando. I've only been once (albeit for a night) since I moved.

lol, I waded into the fray when they started attacking an author I like. I got a bit of hatred and nastiness spewed at me but I expected as much. Lol, I also got a message on facebook from someone saying they couldn't have said it better themselves :p When things start turning into a witch hunt I can't stay quiet.

I look forward to seeing you at MegaCon. I'm trying to decide whether to stay the weekend or just day trip it on Saturday & Sunday. I haven't seen anyone do a steampunk Baroness yet, which will make it fun. The top is from Fan Plus Friend they are custom sizing it for me.

My impression has been that the mean/petty/shallow crowd will drift into whatever scene is popular. After the steampunk scene deflates (i.e. is reduced to those who like it for its style and not its popularity), most of these folks will move on to whatever is popular next. Oilpunk or dieselpunk or what have you.

the steampunk comnmunity isn't that bad... dj_fact50 February 8 2010, 06:19:04 UTC
Seriously, I've been heavily involved in the Goth scene since the late 90's. I started DJing and promoting clubs in SF in 2000. I have been a fan of weird Victorian and "Steampunk" since I was about 5 years old in the early 80's and have been monitoring every new Steampunk inspired release in that time. I also created the first music project to purposely render a Steampunk atmosphere back in 2003. I've now been heavily involved in the recent "Steampunk" scene since its inception in 2005. The drama in the Goth/Industrial scene blows away any amount of drama present in the Steampunk scene imho ( ... )

I tend to agree with you about the closed-mindedness and the desire to keep out any perceived "outsiders". (That's what made me pop over to your journal. :) ) It is starting to feel very limiting. Time after time, talented people come in to share their art or photographs only to be told it isn't really steampunk. That irks me to no end, which is exactly why I stay - I want to be the one who encourages those people.

But hang in there. This steampunk community is not the only one. I find Brass Goggles and even the Steampunk Ning to be a bit more open-minded, and they have more members. I actually think there need to be MORE steampunk communities, different opinions on what steampunk looks like, etc., because those who consider themselves the "authorities" right now need some serious competition. ;)
