Play with modes: Screen and Soft Light are usually the beginning levels, but Hard Light, Lighten, Pin Light, Hue and Color can be fun to try.
Ooh... thanks for the advice. I'm working on the Tumblr Graphic challenge at gameofcards, and I wasn't sure what to do with larger textures beyond using them as backgrounds, which I didn't want to do. :P
