Hey so, if people want they can wear black for the Jena 6 case. "As of Wednesday, according to the local NAACP and news reports, organizers said they were hoping up to 40,000 people would converge on Jena, a two-lane-highway town of 3,500." I just heard about that today because some black co-workers were dressed like it was a funeral. I googled it but it didn't tell me very much. All I gathered was that these guys went ballistic over some racial prank and beat up some kid, and they were charged with attempted murder, which was only dropped because of media attention and pressure from demagogues. What is this "lead up" you speak of? The link is dead.

Oh apparently there were some other incidents. Some white kids beat up a black kids and hit him over the head with a bottle and no charges were filed. Another white kid threatened a black kid with a shotgun and was not charged. And the DA said something about being able to end the black kids "life with a pen." So its not all smoke and mirrors. But maybe its an election year, racism still sells in some places. This town had less people in it then my highschool.

Also, attemtped murder? Isn't that a bit harsh considering beating a kid up with a broken bottle doesn't even warrent a citation? Its not that sharpton isn't grandstanding, its just these people are also pretty stupid.

It does seem like a very unfair charge given what little I know of the case. I can't comment on the implied double standard, not knowing anything about the cases or people involved, but everything about the social structure in that state seems like a recipe for resentment. And it's clear to me that nothing good will come out of this media circus. Maybe a handful emotionally out of control black kids will be out on the streets to help bring down the quality of life for everyone else (yay?) but the fundamental assumptions of the justice system will not be questioned, nor will a suitable resolution to these racial tensions be found.

I think it ups the cost of stupidity. The next town DA might think a bit before putting up such rediculous charges.
