Was gonna make this an away message, but I couldn't figure out how to express my outrage succinctly enough. I uncovered the following article while perusing the news this noon : Not It! Mass. Elementary School Bans Tag.

LinkBut, yes, I'm a little pissed off by this. Firstly, the justification for the ban is that if the children got hurt in ' ( Read more... )

Hell, I fell off my bike loads of times. My parents always told me to quit crying and get back on. Even the time I damn near broke my pelvis.

Seriously, the solutions of sue them, medicate them, or put them in therapy is bullshit. More kids need to grow a pair and deal. Besides, it's nature's way of trying to weed out the stupid kids. XP

Ya, how do you learn how to rid a bicycle without injury? I'm pretty sure you don't, so what now? No bikes?

i agree with EVERYTHING you just said. the way kids are being raised today is ridiculous. i think that some of how OUR generation was raised was a little iffy - i mean look at us (not specifically our friends, but just our age group), so many of us are going to be relying on our parents till we're 30, or we dont have any major opinions on anything big in the world b/c it doesnt matter, our parents will take care of it. our parents were making up for the fact that THEIR parents did nothing for them that NOW all parents think they need to protect their kids from anything ( ... )

You're absolutely right about not giving kids anough credit. And there's this whole other attitude that I encountered this summer which was like kids are a completely different species and impossible to rationalize with, so why discipline your kids? It won't work, they'll just throw a fit and in a few years they'll magically turn into mature responsible fun-to be around adults anyway. Uh, what?

There's like this weird trend towards being really permissive, or really over-protective, and they are both really, really irritating when you encounter them in mass. I'm pretty sure I put some kids in time-out this summer who had never heard the word 'no'. One told me repeatedly that he hated me, which I'm pretty sure works to convince his mom to do what he wants since he looked shocked when I told him that I was okay with that.

Although I think the mom who asked that I bleach the legos everyday to get rid of germs takes the cake in the Congratulations, You're Creating Invalids Contest.

I'm soo glad someone else got their 'reading privilages' taken away when they got in trouble. That was the first thing to go when I did something bad.

Ya, know it's funny that you should say that, but my parents 'stepped in' alot more for Chad too, to the point where he is not an invalid per se, but he's alot less capable and resourceful than he really should be for a freshman in college.
"Hey Cari, can you come get me so that I can use your washing machine?"
"What's wrong with the ones in your building?"
"Oh. Nothing, I just don't know where they are."
"So, find them."

I sure would have been in trouble in elementary school when we were playing tag and I ran face first into another kid and my tooth went into his forehead. He just got a little cut while my permanent front tooth almost fell out. My parents probably would have gotten sued if that happened today, instead everyone was just concerned that both of us were okay.

holy crap. that is actually really funny to imagine. but i bet it hurt. ya know, in the 5th grade, my best f riend and i were goofing around and when she went to get a drink of water, for SOME reason i jostled her and her braces-filled mouth hit the water fountain and cut her lip. wonder how much she could have gotten in court for that?

I knocked out some kid's tooth in the 2nd grade. He had said something mean and I hit the bottom of his thermos when he went to take a drink. I only meant to make him choke and look dumb(only), but he lost his front tooth, which wasn't even loose. Blood everywhere. That's what, agression with a blunt object?
