So I haven't done one of these in awhile...thought it might be time for one. Plus, it was a pretty fun weekend.
Friday after work Joel and I had tickets to the Nationals baseball game. The stadium is right next door to the Navy Yard where we work, so that's convienent. The game didn't start until 7, so we went for a run beforehand up to the Capitol/Supreme Court and back. ~4 miles. Showered and changed at the Navy Yard gym (which I had never been to before, it's decent) and walked down the street to the stadium. Proceeded to get chili cheese nachos and chili cheese fries and beer (thereby undoing all the running...) and then later a funnel cake (we're now WAY past undoing the running and just being damaging, ha). We had these great seats from Joel's boss who couldn't go. They were like 10 ft away from the outfielder. The Nats were playing the Phillies and we were winning, then they were winning, then it was all tied up 6 to 6 in inning 9. Then they went into what I called "Sudden death overtime!!!". It makes it more exciting that way. But we left during the 11th inning. I guess the Nats blew it in the 12th. Oh well.
Saturday morning I had to get ready for a bridal shower potluck. The bride-to-be was requesting no gifts, but instead the woman throwing the shower asked we all make a 1 pager (could be words, pictures, etc) to put into a book, plus a dish to share, and a recipe card. So I handed over the recipe for Summer Berry Pie (it's the recipe that gets around), threw together a spinach salad (to be honest, Joel did most of the chopping and assembling. I just toasted some pine nuts and cleaned up) and printed out pictures. Then I was off to Bethany's bridal shower and Joel went off to a baby shower (the kid's already been born- it was more like a meet and greet) for one of his friends. Then we met at the dance studio at 3:45pm to help out with auditions for middle schoolers and then high schoolers for the jazz companies. It was really stuffy hot and humid in the studio. Later that night we headed to
Ray's Hellburger. It was the best burger I've ever had. Really super juicy. And for Saturday night, we didn't even have to stand in line that long to order (come in 15 minutes later though, and the line was almost out the door). They got a lot of media attention lately because Obama and Biden stopped in for lunch a couple weeks ago, randomly. But the place is good. Then we headed to another restaurant so Joel could get his mom a gift certificate for her birthday. I think I fell asleep before midnight.
Sunday, Joel, his roommate Chris and I headed to Freedom Plaza to participate in the Washington Post's
Post Hunt. It's a free scavenger hunt in its second year. Really fun, though I can't believe the people who won solved the final puzzle (which was like 5 separate steps) in under 20 minutes. We were on step 2 when they were done. Ridiculious. It was cold and the three of us were in shorts- not weather appropriate. Even still, afterwards we headed to
TangySweet because a new one had opened up and of course we had to try it. For those who don't know, TanySweet is the forerunner of the DC yogurt craze that hit last year. It's like Pinkberry or Red Mango. So far we now have TangySweet, Yogiberry, Sweetgreen, YogenFruz, Caliyogurt, Iceberry...all with their different spins. Though TangSweet still wins in my book. It's coming to Ann Arbor, too. I saw an under construction storefront on South U. Went back to Joel and Chris's place afterwards (it's like 6pm) where the boys played the Wii snowboarding game while I worked on my midterm for an accounting class I'm taking on Thursday nights. Around 8:30 we decided we were hungry and headed to Whole Paycheck (okay, Whole Foods) for some food- salad and chicken pot pie and apples and berries. I've still got a bunch more of midterm to work on before Thursday.
So not EVERY weekend is like this...but close. I'm also looking for a place to live in Boston, because I'll be moving there in August. I'm taking a 2-year hiatus from the rat race and going back to academia, hanging out with the nerds at MIT. I'll be at their Sloan business school, which may not be QUITE as nerdy as their main campus, but still relatively nerdy. My parents think I've lost it. Gone completely nuts. Why on earth would I leave my stable, well-paying job that I can never get fired from to incur two years of debt? Especially in this economy when so many people don't have jobs? Why not just go part-time at Georgetown and have work pay for it? I've heard and considered a lot of those arguments from family, friends, co-workers. The short answer is I'm looking to do something other than defense work. I love DC and wouldn't mind coming back after my hiatus (which, worst case scenario my boss says he'll always hire me back) but I'd like to come back with a different focus. It was a hard toss-up between Michigan's Ross business school and MIT's Sloan school. The people at Michigan are just super NICE. I'm on a hugging basis with their director of admissions. The dean goes out to the bar with everyone. They have a gorgeous new building and the culture is just really warm. MIT is arguably less-well put together, they rely a lot of student self-iniative. The people on the whole seem nice, maybe a few tools sprinkled here and there. But the place is largely focused on entrepreneurship, which is a big draw for me. Plus, I get a new city to wreak havoc on.
Kristin and my blog Girls Guyde is chilling out for the moment- we both have a ton of things going on that the everyday blogging was getting to be too much.
So that's the update for now. My summer looks to be filled with looking for a place to live in Boston, weddings, a vacation (hopefully) and finishing up this class so I don't get my butt kicked by the Wall Streeters in the fall.
