I don't follow. Were the summer associates hot or something? Or does this betoken the beginning of the end for summer as a whole?

It has meaning on multiple levels. In a general sense it refers to the fact that job will be even less exciting than it already was. No more scavenger hunts kicking off from my desk, no wine and cheese receptions that I'm not invited to, no one inventing ways for me to decorate my headset...
