Sorry it's been a while...
So I've had the same class of sixth graders since last Friday. Three language arts classes, two geography classes, some of the kids I see twice in one day because they take both from the same teacher.
(
sorry i just need to rant this out )

(Yeah i suspect fewer highschoolers grab each other and start a loud conga line around the room. Maybe.)

I don't know if this would work, but what about put them into smaller groups (say 4), have them read what they wrote, then write a collaborative project (short play?) that could either extend the film or have them put all their characters together in a new given situation: Kuzco, Yzma, Pancha and Kronk are aboard the Enterprise. (or something like that) That should easily go over a few days and on the last day they could share the project out loud and the class could debate if they think the characters were portrayed as they might behave in changed circumstance???

Contest? Whose diary/writing is best/most realistic/closest to the character? With voting beacause everyone loves to win!
After they submit their diary, then have them write what they think the character SHOULD have done differently or what choices they personally would have made instead.
Debate? Pick a topic: money, friendship, lying, etc. and have kids talk/write about it from their character's viewpoint.
