Oh my gosh - this is wonderful!! And so much what I needed after that disaster of the latest episode you have no idea (the only bright spot of which is that they indicated that there were in fact other employees before John! So we may get canon on that point!)
I just love the way this is crafted - you come at the timeline and the conversations in such an interesting, roundabout way - where people talk in ever tightening circles and events are stated just slightly out of order - I don't really have the vocabulary to describe it but it sets such a wonderful, perfect mood. The depth of feeling that John is carefully holding back is so evident, and it all comes together so beautifully at the end - this is just everything I could have hoped for, thank you!
*TACKLES* I WAS JUST ABOUT TO EMAIL YOU TO MAKE SURE YOU SAW IT! THANK YOU ENDLESSLY FOR BEING SO PATIENT! You have no idea how shitty the other versions of this were, seriously, it would have been terrible and I would have felt awful not giving you something you'd enjoy. I'm so, so happy you liked it!! Thank you for such a WONDERFUL prompt!
(And oh my god, this last episode hinting at John not being first--I about had a heart attack, asdjflksajf)
This is great! You handled the miscommunication between Reese and Finch beautifully. It's one of my favorite concepts in slash fic, but it's sometimes a hard sell between two characters who are essentially intelligent and perceptive people- but you managed to place both of them right in their blind spots.
Also, your procrastination planning really paid off, in my view. The name thing was a lovely touch.
Oh thank you! I'm really glad you thought it worked! I think John notices a lot of thinks but has a hard time interpreting the emotions that prompted the behavior, and they both have (at least in this fic) the misconception that they don't deserve to have what they want to the fullest extent that they want it? If that makes sense.
Hmmmm, this is a wonderful fic! I know I'm years late to the party & I'm not even sure how I got here--one of your fics on AO3, I think?--but I wanted to tell you how much I enjoyed it. I have a hard time figuring out PoI characters' motivations & thoughts, especially in fanfic but also in canon sometimes. My brain just has a hard time with schemes-within-schemes & everyone telling partial truths if not actual lies. John & Harold are such clams though that sometimes, when they finally figure things out, I can hitch a ride on the clue bus. ;-) Plus your title!--I love titles that are obscure to me, whether from quotations or wordplay or self-referencing. It's like one more shiny sticker saying, 'Come read this! You're gonna like it!'
So I did & I did. ;-) Thanks very much for writing & sharing this with us.
