She was one of the authors that inspired me to get my first "grown-up" library card 3 years before I was supposed to. (Anne McCaffery was the other)
A few years ago, shen she was very ill and in the hospital, someone organized a message-collection for her. She was feeling very old and alone, and they thought she would appreciate hearing from people who were touched by her works. (Apparently the response volume crashed a laptop or two ;) ) I am SO glad that I took the time to write in - so she actually had a chance to know how much her characters were an important part of my life.
I remember that: I wrote a very heartfelt note myself. I was so pleased afterwards that her caregivers wrote back to all the groups that had sent such and let us know that it had made a difference, that she knew how much she had meant to so many....
i, too, wrote in to her "support groupies"...i fell in love with her "witch world" series. she was one in a long line of fantasy/sci fi folks that have fed mo brain for many years. she will be missed!
