"But it is impossible to replace a person one has loved with distractions."

Feb 07, 2010 01:21

I've been hibernating the past couple of days, gearing up for the emotional onslaught that is sure to comprise the next few days. I've also been distracting (read: entertaining) myself the best way I know how: with a twenty year obsession. That's right: Soaps. What else?

Ellen Parker.

you know what sadly makes this whole list ridiculous? and it sticks out like a sore thumb? Crystal Chappell at #8.

seriously, i love CC, but no. no fucking way. CC is good. she's damn good. but she's not #8 good in the scheme of things.

what about Kimberly McCoullgh and Finola fucking Hughes. i'm not even big fans, but come on! seems like another bullshit list that's only a popularity contest. if it really had to do with acting, i think i could scrape off 20 easily. ugh. lists.

Ellen Parker, Kimberly McCullough, and Finola Hughes were three of the women I put on my list immediately. I mean, MY GOD!

I love CC too, and I do believe that she deserves a high placement (Top 20? Top 15?), but CC ranking above the likes of Jane Elliot or Linda Dano or Debbi Morgan or even Maureen Garrett? Not a fucking chance.

And HBS My Girlfriend? Ohhhh, J! HBS My Girlfriend got ROBBED!

Blind, deaf, and dumb Fuckers.

Damn, how could I forget Jensen Buchanan? I've always loved her. She's totally been added to the list.

Thanks, babe. *hugs*

Thanks, doll. *hugs*

and Deidre Hall's appearance on it kind of invalidates it for me

Hall is an acquired taste, IMO, and so I can understand your thinking. I do think she often relied on any number of "crutches" in playing Marlena, but she could often be quite superb. Hell, she took on a damn demonic possession storyline and somehow, sold the shit out of it. Heh. I do think she deserves a spot on the list, but not necessarily as high up as she placed. In terms of Days, Evans, Pease, and Hayes are better than Hall, and Hunley is better than them all.

Lauren needs a good storyline to shine, and she's been sadly lacking in those for probably the majority of her time on the show.

I do think Koslow has great potential as an actress (her time on B&B was quite fruitful), but unfortunately Days doesn't give her the ability to shine. She's reduced to a breathy vixen with evil tendencies who is only allowed to show x amount of heart. And ( ... )

I bow to your much, much superior knowledge! I didn't even know Louise Sorel played anyone besides Vivian... Days has always been my only soap, very short excursions into Y&R and Another World notwithstanding.

The only thing I really feel like I know enough about to respond to is your comment about Lauren Koslow. And I agree, pretty much entirely. I think she does have the talent, but just isn't called upon very often to use it. The Jate storyline did let her shine. I was devoted to Days for a few months there because of it... she was even able to pull Drake Hogestyn out of his ridiculous mannerisms and bad acting. She made that storyline, imo.

And her mannerisms are nothin' compared to Deidre Hall's. OMG. In that Deidre and Drake were extremely well matched. ;P

Heh. I just have too much time on my hands.

I didn't even know Louise Sorel played anyone besides Vivian...

She also did brief stints on Port Charles, Passions, and One Life to Live. But those don't really count. It's all about Vivian Alamain & Augusta Lockridge.

She made that storyline, imo.

Without a doubt!

In that Deidre and Drake were extremely well matched.

Ha. Quite often, yes. Although, I don't know that ANYONE can truly match Drake Hogestyn. Yikes.

I totally forgot Marj Dusay when compiling my list -- and I feel like an idiot for it -- so that's been rectified. For sheer grace alone, I'd put Frances Reid on there, but I'm trying to limit myself to the "powerhouses" or "heavyweights" of sorts. Hence, my Top 5 omissions: unequivocal heavyweights.

It's not just the WLS people weighing in, though. There are a number of other "critics", Mimi Torchin, Marlena De Lacroix, and Branco included. A keener eye should have prevailed here, but alas...

Mind you, I have no issues with the inclusion of the many Days people. I have always adored Mary Beth Evans (who is Katherine Bell to me moreso than Kayla Brady) and Patsy Pease and Susan Seaforth Hayes (back in the day? Phenomenal. As in 'Cover of Time Magazine' phenomenal.) I just really feel that many on the list skewed more towards popularity rather than solid chops (hello, Susan Lucci). It IS called "50 Greatest Soap ACTRESSES", after all. If it were the "50 Greatest Soap STARS", I would just keep my mouth shut, but their ( ... )

I had utterly forgotten that Leann Hunley had won an Emmy. I fail. That was the infamous "year of Uta Hagen" too. Oh Days - your poor actors. (I still say Louise Sorel's gonna take supporting in 2010. We'll see...hopefully we'll actually GET to see ( ... )

I still say Louise Sorel's gonna take supporting in 2010.

You mean, Supporting FOR 2010, right? As in, she'll win at NEXT years Emmys? Because for as wonderful as she was in November & December, she should not win (or even be nominated). That category is far too packed already as it is. And Bree Williamson is going to win for OLTL 2009. Mark my words. ;-)

The scenes where she told Shawn that she had been a prostitute still resonate as one of the more extraordinarily raw things I've ever seen in any format, anywhere.

Oh, yes!

And I saw an awful lot of Judith Light's OLTL work.

A Master Class in acting, day in and day out.

BTW you know who else is missing? Brynn Thayer.

Damn. YES. Another woman who went toe-to-toe with Michael Zaslow and not only did she not get trampled, but she often shined.

Speaking of which; shouldn't that be happening soon?Their "Hot 100"? Yeah, I think so. And I think you may be right about the voting. And if that's the case, it's just a stupid way to vote. It opens the door for too many ( ... )
