Call to Arms!

Here is an Op-Ed piece that appeared in a local paper here today. The paper is called The Eureka Reporter and it is owned by a local, wealthy, conservative family. The paper is distributed by free, unrequested (it shows up unless you tell them to stop) home delivery. That means that anyone and everyone gets to read this article. I know that ( Read more... )

I am writing in response to the opinion piece written by Jacques Jacoby that was published in the 6/29/05 edition of the paper. I first wish to point out that I was greatly offended that the Eureka Reporter would be willing to print this piece, as it does not conform with the submissions policy. I respect that people can hold and voice their opinions freely, but to allege that the celebration of gay pride is akin to Hitler’s extermination of Jewish (and homosexual I might add) people and the institutionalized acceptance of slavery in the United States is downright inflammatory. I hope that the Eureka Reporter can refrain from allowing such statements to get past the editing process in the future ( ... )

I would next like to express my sadness at Mr. Jacoby’s statement that disgust for homosexuality is normal and natural. Is there normality in wishing someone else inequality or to deny a couple the chance to fall in love? What about normality in denying someone an occupation or the chance to help in their child’s scouting activities because of who they feel attraction for? Mr. Jacoby states frustration with homosexual individuals working as counselors or clergy members, yet I know of nothing within the job description of counselors that requires the counselor to only be attracted to the opposite sex, let alone that requirement within religious clergy. What degree of normal should be required to hold these positions, and for that matter…what is normal? I understand that the concept of normal has extensive variation (Alfred Kinsey taught us that back in 1948!), but I do not believe we have any right to deny a feeling of normalcy to any individual who is not causing themselves or others harm. That said, I would describe both myself ( ... )

Don't c/p mine or they wont print it!!

As for your response, I think that it would not make it past the editor....the goal is to get the statement passed on to the masses that mr. jacoby reached with his.

Editor's Response! queenociana June 30 2005, 14:19:13 UTC
Angela,

Thank you for your letter, which is a bit long for a letter so I will use it as a guest column. Because of the backlog of opinions, it probably won't appear until next Wednesday or Friday.

We print a diversity of opinions, some which I personally disagree with vehemently -- including Mr. Jacoby's, but they are opinions in the community. We are not censors.

As far as the policy, it is a fine line between personal abuse and opinion, but I will consider your point of view.

Thank you, again, for writing.

Sincerely,

Glenn

I have to disagree with Mr. Jacoby on the basis that he is an idiot along with all those that think he is right ( ... )

No, not really. My letter got quite a reaction from the editor. We're still emailing back and forth over it. And I wasn't exactly polite. The last email I got from the editor is here:

"Yes, Don, I re-read it and I can see where people thought it crossed the
line. Ugh. Oh, well. I must say the guest eds and your letter really
lend clarity to the issue, however. I hope some good can come of it."
