[Mami just stands a distance away, out of range of the projectiles and deeply horrified, unable to move as the battle unfolds and reaches its terrible conclusion. Unable to fight, to help, to do anything. This dream speaks to one of her most intense fears and renders her frozen.

When she does manage to speak, her mouth is dry. Her heart hurts. Everything is too bright and loud and painful.]

...so, this....this is how it happened...?

[Kyoko only barely notices Mami, but she does. Taking a deep breath, she answers her question.]

This...this is exactly how it happened. How did it happen again?

[She doesn't expect to be heard or answered and jerks in surprise, eyes wide and frightened and no longer oh so carefully blank.]

I didn't...I never knew. How she- Sayaka-san, I mean, that- that it was like this.

[Her words are strengthless and lost, and Mami shudders- swallows, breathes in deep, before tentatively approaching Kyouko.]

Last time I didn't just kill her. I killed us both. So we could stay together.

[She stays frozen in place, still slumped over on the ground, arms hanging limp at her sides.]

[There is no adequate response to that, and Mami feels too small to try. She can't hope to erase Kyouko's grief, or even lessen it- how can she? Once, Mami was prideful enough to think she had the right to interfere. (She could call it whatever she liked, but that's all it was.) But she can't do that anymore, for anyone, not like she used to- and especially not here. The threads that tie Kyouko and Sayaka together don't touch her; it is not a web with any place for her. So Mami won't try to force a space, even as she slowly kneels down to touch Kyouko's shoulder. There's no pity in the contact.

It just kills her heart to see this.]

[Kyoko turns her face away as she begins to break down. A single hot tear rolls down her cheek, then another, and soon enough she's sobbing, much as she's trying with all her might to fight back the tears and not show so much weakness in front of another person. She can't, of course. Sayaka is gone. How could something like personal dignity even hope to match up to her grief?]

[Mami does her best to look away, to give Kyouko that much, even as her hand gently squeezes the other girl's shoulder.

If Kyouko was anyone else, even a stranger, Mami would try to pull her in for a hug. But she's not- she never will be anyone other than Kyouko. There is still distance between them, shades of bad feeling, and it seems just all too possible that any such attempt will be met with angry rejection.]

[That is all too likely. Kyoko isn't sure what she wants right now. She's a bit irked by Mami touching her, but at the same time it's too comfortable to refuse. Either way, all that is in her heart right now is anguish.]

Damn it, Sayaka, didn't we agree this would never happen again?!
