It occurs to me that I've been throwing out the names of Zerg units without describing them, on the assumption that EVERYONE played Starcraft, which is patently not the case.
So I have prepared a brief Zerg Primer.
AHEM
The Zerg are a race of parasites that infest and radically alter life forms they come across, devouring entire worlds in their relentless expansion across the universe. They are the main boogeyman in the Starcraft universe. Kerrigan was a human psychic who got captured by the zerg. The Zerg Overmind (sort of a collective consciousness that commanded all Zerg) recognized that they had something special in her, and instead of just using her body as biomass (the fate of most people caught by zerg.) they altered her into a new kind of zerg. Then she kinda took over.
Zerglings are the most common and smallest kind of zerg. They're about the size of a large dog, and attack in swarms. By now, they're probably all over the netherworld, though only in large numbers near the hive cluster. They can hide by burrowing into the ground.
Hydralisks are the basic Zerg shock trooper. They spit spines at enemies and can hide by burrowing into the ground. They're probably about 8 feet tall on average.
Mutalisks are a kind of flying zerg attacker that serve as scouts and raiders. They're about the size of a fighter jet, and can spit parasitic "glaive worms" that bounce between targets causing damage before dying. They can also grow a cocoon and transform into new kinds of zerg that specialize in long range bombardments or on spraying acid on large air targets.
Ultralisks are, uh, big. They're the Zerg big guns, and basically just rip things to bits.
Defilers are kinda scary. They focus on biological warfare, spraying enemies with horrible diseases to weaken them to the point that they can't fight, or release clouds of tiny parasites that just obscure your vision.
Drones are the Zerg work force. If something needs doing that isn't killing things, drones probably do it.
Overlords are basically Zerg servers. They float around and act as relays for the psychic signals that control the zerg swarms, so there's usually a few following a zerg army. They can also carry zerg units over impassible terrain.
Not pictured because I'm lazy:
- Scourges are little flying guys that explode
- Infested humans are little running guys that also explode
- Queens do various horrible things
- Guardians and Devourers are the two alternate forms of mutalisks
- Lurkers hide underground and shoot spikes out of the ground
- The Creep. The creep isn't really a creature. it's a steady stream of goo exuded by the zerg hatchery. It spreads out along the ground and basically covers everything that doesn't move. It supplies the resources needed to grow zerg structures, and will basically be covering everything in the general vicinity of the hive cluster.
