For the other readers: He doesn't seem to have much else obviously wrong with him, apart from weight loss.
His (previous) diet was around 4 packets of senior and a double of adult - which is a lot for an old cat in absolute terms.
A switch to a strict kidney diet, an anabolic steroid once a month, and daily painkiller gunk (which he loves) plus a new heart pill MAY reduce the load on his kidneys to the point where they work well enough - for a while at least. The absolute amount of protein in his diet is the immediate problem.
The vet will monitor him to see whether the new regime is good enough for quality of life, but a day on a drip had him looking perky again. He thought it was worth trying anyway, rather than the immediate alternative, and we trust him.
