Cats and Other Inexplicable Things

My cat makes me feel inadequate. :( She won't play with any of the toys I've bought or made her, including paper bags, laser toys and a "baby" I made from an old pair of pantyhose. She doesn't like to cuddle much. BUT--she often looks sad, and she meows at me pitifully when I ignore her, as she seems to want. Of course, as soon as I start to ( Read more... )

When my sister died, she asked me to take her cat, who is very difficult (allergic to EVERYTHING except baked chicken breast). She is 12 and of course set in her ways. Like your cat, she wanted to be left alone much of the time, too, and my sister honored her request. However, I am a different kind of mama, and I force my attentions on her all the time. She hates to be picked up, but I pick her up. She doesn't want kisses, but I kiss her anyway. So, after 1.5 years of my "abuse," she's either getting used to it, or growing to enjoy it. I do know that she always wants to be in the same room as me, and sleeps with me half the night (my other cat gets the first half of the night).

My advice: Don't give up on the love-by-force! So, okay, I've been bitten a few times, but it's a small price to pay for a mouthful of fur and an occasional purr.

Heh. I've basically decided that I'm going to show affection in whatever way I want, and she'll just have to get used to it! I think she'll like being cuddled, once she gets used to it.

My cat will, if she pleases, sit on me. Frequently when it's not really convenient - if I have the laptop open on my knee, f'r instance. But I pet her anyway, because it's nice. But her life's ambition is to sit on the Man, my husband, who does not want her to and won't have so much as a paw on his leg!

You could try a feather. I acquired - can't remember how - a long pheasant feather, and the cat cannot resist it.

But yes, cats. Perverse.

The feather is a great idea. Our local pet supply store sells peacock feathers and my cats love them. Raoul will carry them around the house in his mouth - quite a comical sight.

Hmm, looks like I'm going in search of a feather. Thanks!
