I think it's a good thing that you wrote to them. We have a similar situation in the US with certain blood services. I'm sure they'd respond similarly.

After giving blood for 22 years I was suddenly refused on the grounds that I was English. (and therefore potentially carrying mad cow disease) I was quite upset at the time, especially as I have been a vegetarian most of my life. As a nurse I particularly resented the fact a huge number of units of blood are used for people nearing the end of their life, and so this faint potential risk is pretty immaterial. I was informed that there wasn't a way that they could separate blood into safe for neo-nates and suitable for palliative care...it's a pity isn't it?
