Wow - that ex's behavior was worse than my ex's behavior, and that dog suffered more than my dog suffered. Boston is affectionate and has generally recovered quite well from her trauma, although she tends to bark at humans she doesn't know (pretty normal for a dog, but probably she does it a little more than average) and she occasionally takes a dislike to certain dogs (although she's fine with the majority of them, so this is also not all that far outside of normal dog behavior).
Your description of Luke's separation anxiety confirms for me my sense that I shouldn't have any more dogs. Cats can have plenty of their own behavior problems; it's not even as if cats' problems are inherently any less severe. But I'm just more able to accept cat behavior problems as something I have to put up with for the sake of being able to have cats.
I'm so sorry you've had such bad news about Boston. We've just been through something very similar with S's cat (sudden discovery of a stomach tumour) and had to put her down at the beginning of July.
i'm so, so sorry to hear about boston. as you know, i just went through a fairly similar thing with one of my beloved geriatric kitties. it's such a hard decision to make, and in my experience it's something that can waver and change over time. thinking of you, boston, and your loved ones. <3 <3 <3
