Well, I'm not really sure if these are "classic" per se, but they definitely have queer themes:
- Virginia Woolf: Mrs Dalloway
- Michael Cunningham (I think): The Hours
- Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Café (forget the author)
Anne Marie Macdonald definitely features queer characters and themes.
You can also look for stuff by Oscar Wilde.

Good luck!

This is a good article, listing some classic novels: http://books.guardian.co.uk/top10s/top10/0,,523071,00.html

One novel that's considered a classic is The Front Runner by Patricia Nell Warren. I haven't read that, so I can't comment about it.

I have read Tales of the City by Armistead Maupin and the rest of the series (as well as buying the TV series). A very good set of stories.

I've also read and enjoyed Maurice by E M Forster. The movie is excellent.

Good luck with your project. :-)

In my Queer Lit course in undergrad, we covered many classics, all of which are considered "queer," so these would be safe to choose from:

Orlando, Virginia Woolf <--Recommended.
Death in Venice, Thomas Mann
Giovanni's Room, James Baldwin
Symposium, Plato (can be dry reading)

Not always considered "Classic":

The Lost Language of Cranes, David Leavitt <---Beautiful novel.
Rubyfruit Jungle, Rita Mae Brown <---More "popular" fiction. A fun read.
Funny Boy, Shyam Selvadurai
Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit, Jeanette Winterson
