I have always wanted to try archery after the actress Geena Davis nearly qualified for the Olympics in it when she was in her 40s. She said at the time that she grew up not believing she was athletic, and then she took up archery in her 30s and it helped her realize that athleticism is within everyone. As a nerdy girl I really appreciate that idea.
I am most proud of it because it does indeed look suitably badass :D
You know, both my mum and dad have told me that I should be at the 2016 Olympics. I laugh, but in a way, as a completely unfit, unsporty-in-general person (outdoorsy? Sure, when I get the chance. But sport? NO.), I also love the idea that there is a sport I don't feel like I totally suck at and will never 'get'. 2016 here I come :D (well. Maybe 2020? :3)
I have to be honest: there is something about the idea of an archery tournament that fills me with history-geek glee as well as the vague possibility that I could be less disappointingly awful at sport than I am now.
I would encourage everyone to have a go at archery! The only reason I have a bruise is that the bow was so heavy I had to lock my shoulder to hold it up, which meant my arm kept getting in the way. With a lighter recurve bow, I think I hit the arm guard about twice out of 100+ shots this week. I am in any case unscathed.
(Also, I mean, the beginner's bows we were given aren't *that* heavy, I am just a tiny person and not overly strong in the shoulders. In my defence, they are solid steel).
