Challenge 001: Post-Series

Summary: Perhaps not even death will make this kid give up the chase.
It wasn’t supposed to happen like this. No, not like this. Naruto ignores the ringing in his ears that is there partly because of Sakura frantically trying to heal him and get him to speak, and partly from the blow to the head that Sasuke had delivered nicely only moments ago. He wasn’t supposed to be there, to feel anything at all. He shouldn’t be breathing, but he is. Barely, but he is. Naruto extends a bloody hand out to Sasuke’s, takes hold of it. Squeezes as hard as he can, hopes for a reaction. Sasuke’s eyes remain shut.
A surge of panic slams into Naruto’s heart, and Sakura’s trying to soothe him, but he can’t hear a word she’s saying. Because it’s at that precise moment that he realizes that he will never again be faced with those dark eyes that once threatened to swallow him whole.
…Take me with you.
Naruto promised to die with him, and Sasuke notes to himself quite smugly that he broke it. His eyes close involuntarily, and it’s really starting to hurt to breathe. He can vaguely hear Sakura shouting, and there’s a growing pain in his hand. He wonders if it’s Naruto, still trying to hold on to him. Perhaps not even death will make this kid give up the chase.
Everything’s fading away, now, and in the back of Sasuke’s mind he realizes that he can still taste miso.
