Anyone read anything good lately? I'm stuck in a loop of re-reading stuff. If I had to pick a genre I'd ask for fantasy recommendations, but I'll try anything.
I've been reading free books on my Kindle lately; it's been a good way to branch out to books that I wouldn't have read or even heard of otherwise (and there are also some great classics for free, too
( ... )
This reads like a list of what I've been doing lately... reading lots on a Kindle and trying to get around to Naomi Novik's latest :-)
The Farseer books have a special place in my heart, and eternal_fish's too; we have two copies of several and she's been rereading Fool's Fate. The Liveship Traders books by Robin Hobb are great too.
In Honor Harrington withdrawal, I've been branching out to John Ringo... definitely not fantasy, though, and his latest aren't as good as Cally's War (still my favorite).
My current book, based on the author's recent editorial in Asimov's, is Lord Valentine's Castle by Robert Silverberg. Definitely enjoying that!
I've been enjoying Neil Gaiman's prose work. "American Gods" is one of my all time favorites, and I recommend "Neverwhere" as well if you haven't read one or both of those.
Lately I've enjoyed the Changed World novels by SM Stirling. It's a series that starts post-apocalyptic, and progresses quickly into a medieval-like setting. Lots of adventuring, war, and some intrigue. The first trilogy is "Dies the Fire", "The Protector's War" and "A Meeting at Corvallis" and is fairly self-contained.
There's a good follow-up series that takes place in the same world, starting with "The Sunrise Lands", that I've been reading. Only the first three books have been published so far, and book three leaves the story in a bit of a cliffhanger, so be warned before you start reading it.
I'm going to make a list of these and bring it to the library this weekend.
Finishing The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss for the second time (which I often describe as Harry Potter for grown-ups) is what kicked off my search for something new to read. Finishing books I really love always makes me kind of sad.
The book endorsement that really hooks me is when a reviewer can't say much about the book for fear of spoiling the experience. That's how I ended up reading The Gone Away World by Nick Harkaway, which is sort of post-apocalyptic sci-fi. With lots of kung fu, exploding sheep, and awesomeness. Sarah especially I think would like it.
Alison raves about this kid's series called The Hunger Games, and I started that last night. Not something I would normally read but it will tide me over until I can check some of this other stuff out.
I have thought about a kindle. Dan and Sarah, any problems with yours?
I love my Kindle (I have the first gen... I assume the second gen would only be more awesome, but defer to those who actually own one). It was a gift, and at first I didn't think I'd get much use out of it, but I was very wrong. lillokiangel gave one to poeticruse for his birthday; I'm curious to hear how he likes his.
The Gone Away World? That sounds awesome, and I'll check it out.
